In case you missed it, we’ve just put out a midseason report that helps summarize where things stand at this point. With so much subject to change in the state hierarchy, the next few weeks of volleyball coverage will be very exciting.
So, let’s start you off with a few mid-week matches to follow as we reach crunch time.
Tuesday (9/28)
The Tuesday slate is full of contests with huge postseason implications.
Grand Island Central Catholic vs. Kearney Catholic
This has to be the biggest match of the week. For these two teams, it’s probably the biggest match of the season so far.
Grand Island Central Catholic is one of the few remaining teams that can still boast an undefeated record this year. The Crusaders will part that mark on the line when they face a one-loss Kearney Catholic team that already has a handful of marquee wins.
Is this a preview of the Class C1 title match?
Wisner-Pilger vs. Howells-Dodge
C2 versus D1 matchups are always intriguing, and this is also a meeting between top-four teams in the teams’ respective classes.
Wisner-Pilger has put together a solid 12-4 campaign in Class C2, and they’ll test their strength against one of D1’s top teams. Howells-Dodge has some stout hitting talent that can go compete with much bigger schools, so the Jaguars surely won’t be intimidated when they take the court Tuesday.
Omaha Westside vs. Papillion-La Vista
For the next few weeks, these two talented teams will look to claw their way up the wildcard standings. This is a big step in that journey.
The Warriors and Monarchs met during opening weekend at the Bellevue West Invite, and the 2-1 battle went to Westside. This divisional matchup should bring similar excitement as the teams meet again Tuesday night.
Columbus Scotus vs. Columbus Lakeview
Who doesn’t love a good cross-town rivalry?
Lakeview and Scotus have one prior meeting this season, with the Vikings taking a 2-0 victory on Sept. 4. The Shamrocks will have another chance to take down their neighbors from up north, although only one team has managed to defeat Lakeview so far this year.
Thursday (9/30)
The excitement continues with more compelling Thursday matchups.
Lincoln Southwest vs. Millard West
Bring on a rematch from last Saturday!
Southwest and Millard West clashed at the Allison Weston Invitational over the weekend. The Silver Hawks took the match in a wild three-set slugfest, and now the squad from Lincoln gets a chance to host the Wildcats.
Both of these teams will have a big say in who takes the Class A crown this year.
Maywood-Hayes Center vs. Wauneta-Palisade
We move to another matchup that involves big-time title contenders.
Maywood-Hayes Center currently sits atop the Class D2 wildcard standings, and they’re bringing in another big intra-class competitor. Wauneta-Palisade comes in with a record of 9-6 and has challenged a few elite teams already. Thursday presents another opportunity.
Mead vs. Elmwood-Murdock
Finally, we wrap up with an important tilt in Class D1.
Mead has led the field for much of the season. The Raiders have an efficient attack that has lifted them to a 17-2 mark, and they’ll host an Elmwood-Murdock squad that is looking to break into D1’s top group.
Like all the other matchups on this feature, there’s a lot on the line here.
