I have four teams that have decided to be outliers in that statement. I want to give these squads the recognition they deserve as they have made significant strides to raise themselves to near the top of their respected conferences.
Florence
Here we have a Florence squad in the BCSL as they came off roughly a .500 season in the spring. Not many expected them to make the push they have so far this season as they are off to the best start in school history!
The squad plays together and they ensure that its all about getting wins and not who wants to be in the spotlight. How have they been doing this through team defense. They are playing for one another and they never give up on a play.
Ferris
Now we have Ferris in the HCIAL, a squad that really struggled in the latter half of the season and finished under .500. The team has decided to bounce back and have already exceeded their win total from the spring.
The team is playing solid defense and they have a solid one-two punch in Amanda Zweifler and Ava Estrada. The scary part of this team is everyone’s serving prowess with seven players in the double digits as it comes to aces.
Arts
Let’s take a look at Arts as this squad did not even win a conference match last season going 0-4 in conference play in the SEC. How have they responded? They are an unbeaten 6-0 so far in conference play. Talk about doing a full 180 as it comes to wins and losses so far.
A team blended with senior leadership and some underclassmen talent has made them a complete unit. The sky is the limit for this squad and this squad as four players that can punish you from anywhere on the court.
Toms River North
Lastly, we have Toms River North who finished below .500 in the spring but has come out of the gate this season looking like a completely different team. A season ago was consistency as the main issue by winning a couple, losing a couple throughout the campaign. Right now their only defeat is to Southern.
A team this season that is extremely balanced due to the passing of Riley Budenas as the setter. Five hitters have 25+ kills already, making it impossible to guess where the ball is going.
