The Eagles are seeking the program’s second CIF title since winning their first in 1992. The Eagles did appear in the CIF finals in 2016 and 2017 and are making their first appearance since then. Below, we highlight five freshmen contributors who have helped get Capistrano Valley Christian to the brink of a final.
Ava Nilsson, 5-6 Right Side – Nilsson pitched in offensively with 82 kills on 221 swings during the regular season, third most on the roster. She also put up 22 digs and 7 aces. Her top match of the season saw her produce 10 kills in a five-set victory against Calvary Chapel (Santa Ana) on Sept. 7.
Laekin Wheeler, 5-5 Libero/DS – With 107 digs during the regular season, Wheeler was fourth overall on the team. Her best outing came against The Webb Schools when she made 13 saves in a four-set victory on Sept. 27. She also 20 aces.
Kaleigh Eichler, 5-4 Libero/DS – Another rookie contributor, Eichler handled business to the tune of 99 digs in regular season play. She also had 12 aces, adding to that total in the postseason with a season-high 4 aces in a first-round sweep of Alhambra. Eichler’s highlight match was posting 28 digs in a five-set victory against Calvary Chapel (Santa Ana) on Sept. 7.
Shauna McDowell, 5-5 Setter – McDowell filled her role nicely, dishing out 76 assists during the regular season. It featured a season-best 20 dimes in a sweep over Calvary Chapel (Downey) on Sept. 9. Entering the postseason McDowell also had 63 digs and 20 aces.
Kaia Kubat, 5-7 Right Side/Middle Blocker – The fifth and final freshmen on the roster did her part as well. Kubat ended the regular season with 47 kills, 26 aces, 48 digs and 8 blocks. However, she nearly doubled her block total during the first two rounds of the playoffs, putting up back-to-back outings of 3 blocks in sweeps over Alhambra and Jurupa Valley.
