Continue ReadingWe always appreciate the effort teams put forth to make us look like we know what we are talking about. We predicted two teams we cover would be in contention for an open bid and it went down as we expected! Not exactly but we’ll take it, just as surely as Mavs KC did on the final day. We will also peek in and see how some teams did in some of the other divisions along the way.
17 Open
The goal for the eight teams in the two gold pools is simple, win your pool and you are in. Finish second in your pool, you have a glimmer of hope. Well, the two teams we predicted to be in the hunt, Dynasty 17 Black and Mavs KC 17-1 both finished second. Dynasty had the traditional, the sole 2-1 team in their pool. Mavs went with the easy three teams finish with a 1-2 tie and let’s do the tiebreaker business to sort it out. So, the bid was not secured but the teams who practice ten minutes apart would face off in Omaha for a bid to nationals. Both of these teams have tremendous athletes but we like to highlight the two setters, among the best in the state of Missouri and the country in Ashley Mullen Ashley Mullen 5'10" | S Liberty | 2023 State #9 Nation MO and Logan Jones Logan Jones 5'10" | S Carl Junction | 2023 State #57 Nation MO . Anything other than a three-set tug of war would be non-dramatic at all, so that’s what we needed and what we got. Dynasty jumped out on top grabbing the opening set 25-20 but Mavs fought back to get the second, 25-21. They kept the momentum going in the third winning the set and match 15-9 and giving the team their open bid.
Rockwood Thunder 17 Elite was a team we mentioned in our preview that could be a team grabbing a bid sometime this season. They had some early defeats but put it all together to win the Silver Bracket.
17 USA
PVA 17 Elite was able to grab their USA Bid after a second-place finish on the weekend. They were able to get sweeps in their first two matches before losing in the championship to AVA Texas 17 Adidas. This bid for PVA allows them to test their play against stronger competition the rest of the qualifying season. Rockwood Thunder 17 Navy took home the Bronze Bracket after winning two matches and finished their tournament with a 5-3 record.
17 Liberty
Mavs KC 17-3 was so close to earning a bid entering the last day in the Gold Bracket. With two bids available and four teams, win won the match and you’re in. Unfortunately, Mavs dropped their match but rebounded to gain some hardware with a third-place finish. PVA 17 National were Silver Bracket runner-ups, winning their first match over Iowa Select.
17 American
We know the other Divisions are harder but I stand on the idea the American Bracket gauntlet is the toughest to maneuver. Invasion 17 Blue did it to claim the top prize going 8-2 over three days. Thr33 Volleyball of Missouri also made the Gold Bracket but dropped their opening match to finish tied for 9th.
