17 Open
Mavs KC 17-1 was looking strong through the first two days until a small hiccup, losing a three-set battle with Minnesota Select on Sunday. They etched out the first set 25-23 before getting manhandled in the second. Select kept the momentum, narrowly winning the third 15-13. Mavs are still in the hunt for the bid finishing second and started the gold pool off right with a sweep in their first match over Houston Juniors.
Rockwood Thunder 17 Elite started day 2 still in the mix and started the morning off with a loss to a strong Premier Nebraska team. An essential must-win match against Sky High in their second contest showed Rockwood stay alive with a three-set victory. They put themselves in the conversation to still stay in the gold pool with a win and advance match against 1st Alliance but Alliance dominated both sets to put Thunder at 1-2 and a third-place pool finish, where the top two move on.
We talked about Dynasty 17 Black being a dangerous 2 seed starting the tournament. They handled business on the first day and follow that up with a strong day 2, winning every set. They finally met a team able to figure them out in the opening match of gold pool, losing in two to Premier Nebraska.
Mavs 816 17-1 did what they needed to do on day 1, going 2-1 and staying alive for a bid. Day 2 didn’t come as easy as they would drop every set to bring up the rear in their pool.
The difficult 2-1 three-way tie is what HPSTL 17 Royal faced on the first day and unfortunately, they also got the not wanted 3rd place finish after the tie-breaker. This would put them in the play-in set, where they dropped the first match to be sent to the division two pools. They would match that 2-1 record on the second day to finish second in their pool.
17 USA
Shockwave 17 Chelsea ran into a buzzsaw on the opening day from pool 2, going 0-3. In their first two matches, they endured tough three-set defeats. They reverse fortune on Sunday going 3-0, not dropping a set along the way.
Pool 4 featured Dynasty 17 Blue. They started the day with the all-important opening tournament win. They were outmatched in their next two showings, to finish 1-2 and third in the pool. 1-2 would also be their record on day 2.
Pohaku 17-1 matched Dynasty going 1-2 on the first day. Their day looked fairly similar also winning the first before dropping the next two. They found their mojo on the second day going undefeated.
PVA 17 Elite had a couple of three-setters. One that went their way in their second match, one that didn’t in the finale of the day. With the opening morning win, they ended up 2-1 after Day 1. The second day saw PVA drop the opening match and place themselves in must-win situations to stay in contention. They rebounded well sweeping their way to a 2-1 finish and will head into bracket play on the final day chasing a bid.
Mavs KC 17-2 and Rockwood Thunder 17 Navy were two teams we cover sharing space in the same pool. Rockwood Thunder had the day both teams chased, going 3-0. Mavs scraped out one win to complete the day 1-2. On day 2, Rockwood reversed their fortune going 0-3 in division 1 pool play. The 17-2 Mavs team matched their day one record in division 2 play.
