Continue ReadingWe tend to forget about the first contact and its importance in volleyball when truly it’s the key to success. You hear it all the time… If you can’t pass, then you can’t hit. Here are the top liberos in the 15s divisions that kept their teams going from the back row.
Chloe Carr- Oxford 15 Ren
This team’s defense was a force to watch throughout the tournament and really caused some issues for other opponents. It all starts with their scrappy libero, Chloe Carr. She plays middle back and was insane at reading where the hitter would go. In one play, she dug the opponent’s outside hitter down the line, then covered her hitter, and followed it up with a nice push to the right side of the court to pick up a setter dump. Carr shows up to play every game, and that’s what makes her special.
Aspen Ownby- K2 15 Adidas Mike
Playing for the top 15s team at K2, Aspen Ownby truly owned that libero jersey this past weekend. K2 Adidas Mike was ranked #1 going into the tournament, and one of the reasons was definitely because of this smooth libero. Ownby’s strongest quality is her ability to move so quickly and make it look almost effortless. In defense, she plays left back and has a gift to freely push to her right side to dig an outside attack. Plus, her platform is just simply money. Any avid volleyball player would love to just watch her soft platform!
Reagan Carlyle- Beech South 15 Black
Causing trouble for a lot of opponents, Reagan Carlyle was a fun libero to watch from a defensive standpoint. Her Beech South 15 Black played NKJV 15 Blue (the team who ended it up winning it all) in a high intensity match in Saturday’s pool play. Carlyle’s teammates are quite extraordinary hitting and setting wise, so you forget to look for the person starting the offense. This girl was spot on with her defense where she would not only dig the hard-driven balls but put it in a settable position where their star quarterback could then run the offense easily. Carlyle may not be “flashy,” but she gets the job done which is one of the reasons why this team is so good!
Claire Lawless- BRAVO 15 Black
From a little club in Bowling Green, KY, Claire Lawless showed great skill and knowledge from the libero position. Yes, the best liberos are those who work and crave for more knowledge, but to get to the top, you also need to have the natural feel for the game. Lawless just has it. She’s one of those “gym rats” that watched her two older sisters play volleyball, and Lawless simply developed that effortless gift to pass a ball. Her other sport is also beach volleyball because of her ability to move well in the sand and be an all around shot maker. Watch out for this 2025 recruit in every phase of the game!
