In last weekend’s President’s Day Challenge, a number of setters showcased a high level of skill in the 17 Open/Premier Division.
Each had a variety when it came to supporting cast, but these prospects really caught my eye during the weekend.
Kendal Young Kendal Young 5'9" | S West Michigan Christian | 2023 State MI , FaR Out 17 Black
Young has a lot of weapons to work with on the 17 Black squad, but her consistency and decision-making helps the offense run quite smoothly. She mixes up the sets and hitters well and remains very steady with her play. Young’s serve is also very strong.
Madelynn Rottman, Michigan Elite 17 National East
Rottman is a very adaptive player that has a skillset that can fit in a lot of different areas of the court. She’s got all the tools to be a high-level setter, but also has the footwork and athleticism to be an offensive force at the net. Rottman also put together some great serving runs for her team.
Gianna Sager, Monsters 17 Blue
Sager was another setter that had a strong serve for her team. When it came to her setting, Sager knew exactly what her responsibilities were. While she focused in on specific hitters, she did a good job of putting them in positions to succeed. If it wasn’t broke, Sager didn’t try to fix it.
Molly Edmunds Molly Edmunds 5'10" | S Trenton | 2024 State MI , Passion 17
What really caught my eye about Edmunds during the weekend was her persistent effort. Along with making plays while running the offense, Edmunds was a great force for Passion in a defensive capacity. She gave her all to get to every ball and keep her team in rallies.
Ella Berecz, Michigan Elite 17 National West
Berecz was a very alert player. She was laser-focused as to what was going on around her. Not just where the ball was, but where it was going to be and where her opponents were going to be. Those instincts led to a lot of success for her and the offense. It also opened the door for her to make aggressive plays from the position and score.
Julia Gojcaj Julia Gojcaj 5'9" | S IMG | 2024 State FL , HPVBA 17-1
Gojcaj was part of a two-setter system with HPVBA, but she really got the offense rolling at times during close sets. Gojcaj was able to produce consistently quality sets and recognize the hot hitters quickly.
Jadyn Reynolds, AVBC 17 National Red
AVBC had a pretty small team when compared to their opponents over the weekend. Despite that, Reynolds was able to produce some strong runs for her team. Without the size, Reynolds really had to pinpoint her sets well to give her hitters a chance to avoid blockers and finish points. She did that quite well and showed a lot of promise.
