Not many can always notice the great plays you make while being constantly barraged by powerful attacks coming at you.
However, Michigan has proven to produce some great defensive talent that has went on to play D1 college volleyball.
The Class of 2025 should do more of the same. Here’s 11 that are making a name for themselves right now, including one Ohio product that is excelling in the Michigan club scene. (in alphabetical order).
Lexi Armstrong, Hudsonville/FaR Out: Armstrong is multi-sport, multi-position talent that can excel anywhere on the floor. Her athleticism and quick reactions have made her a standout defender.
Taygan Corstange Taygan Corstange 5'4" | DS/L Gull Lake | 2025 State MI , Gull Lake/Deadfrog: Corstange has really good form and patience for the play. She’s able to time out her digs, not matter how difficult, to give her setter a chance to stay in-system.
Miriam Czarnik, OLSM/Unified: Czarnik has active feet and keeps her head on a swivel. She’s able to take on big attacks and not adjust her technique.
Devin Dzienny, St. Ursula/Legacy: An Ohio product, Dzienny is a big force behind Legacy’s 15-1 ADIDAS play. She plays very smooth and communicates well in the back row. Dzienny also delivers a strong serve.
Kylie Kennedy Kylie Kennedy 5'5" | DS/L Lakeland | 2025 State MI , Lakeland/L2: Kennedy definitely gives the level of effort you need to be a libero. She’s all over the court and willing to collect the bruises to succeed. Kennedy also brings a great serve to the court.
Morgan Lozzi, Clarkston/Team D: Lozzi is part of a great prep program that has developed back-row talent. She also fits the mold with patience and focus. Lozzi lets the play come to her.
Laura Mabrey, Mt. Morris/Michigan Elite: Mabrey is able to cover a lot of ground in the back row without having to move too much. She’s got great instincts and reach on her dig attempts.
Addison Newblatt Addison Newblatt 5'9" | OH Clarkston | 2025 State MI , Clarkston/Legacy: Newblatt is someone that can also impact the game at the net. Her defense is very well-rounded, and she combines that with explosive power on attacks.
McKenna Payne McKenna Payne 5'7" | DS/L SMCC | 2025 State #105 Nation MI , SMCC/Michigan Elite: Payne is very technically sound. She was thrust into a big role at SMCC right away and already displays that veteran poise you look to see in a libero.
Allison Pilot, Unified: Pilot moves into the right spot quickly and is very reliable for her teammates at the net. She works hard to learn from mistakes as well.
Layna Waselewsky Layna Waselewsky 5'5" | DS/L Forest Hills Eastern | 2025 State MI , Lowell/FaR Out: Waselewsky was very impressive in her freshman season with Lowell, proving she can take on attacks from the best in the state. She’s got a high ceiling.
