I shared previously not only do I scout and write for Prep Dig, but I also officiate Juniors Volleyball. With the shortage of officials, I’ve picked up the slack by doing way more tournaments than I planned to do. How about every weekend for the last two months. The good thing is I’ve seen many of the teams and players we cover in Kansas and Missouri. The other good thing, there have been some amazing play and I want to highlight a few things I saw that stood out to me.
1. Good Shot
I have seen some tremendous shots from pin hitters over the last two months and I share this because it’s an important note from rising junior volleyball players, have a tool kit of scoring shots at your disposal. From inside-out line shots, hard cuts, roll shots and perfectly placed tips; the ability to score is something every good team needs.
2. Tremendous Set
We are talking about the 2nd ball from the DS or Libero. I have seen some sets where I’m on the stand saying out the corner of my mouth, tremendous set. The ability to place an out-of-system ball in a perfect swing opportunity for a hitter is a piece of art and all littles should make this skill a priority.
3. You Are Very Smart
It only had been a handful of times but to point 2, a libero who can overhead set the second ball is a dime a dozen. But what’s also great is when you hear the setter tell the hitter to “stay down” when they notice that the overhead set comes from the libero with a foot in front of the 10ft. line. I get elated to see that court awareness and communication, which saves me from having to blow my whistle to signal an illegal attack. More players definitely should pay attention to this area.
4. Parents and Coaches…Be Quiet
Can you please stop talking to the Junior Line Judges? You can say something to me but 9 times out of 10 I’m going to ignore it The young ladies are doing their best and don’t need you yelling at them that it was in or out for five minutes straight. I’ve made it known in my region to my superiors, the day it happens on my court, will possibly be my last day because I won’t let overzealous parents and rude coaches attempting to bully kids doing their best.
5. Score!
Not yelling score from the bleachers though it’s annoying. Starting the match at 4-4 in nonqualifying tournaments and other matches is silly to me. Is it going to lengthen the game that much by not starting at 0?
Already, this is the first edition of From the R1 Stand, and will hope to continue this throughout the season.
