The 17 Open featured eight teams, seven of which came from the mitten. Throughout the weekend of play, a number of eye-catching hitters emerged from this pool of talent.
Michigan Elite 17 Mizuno
Remi Madison Remi Madison 5'9" | OH Grand Blanc | 2023 State MI , OH: Madison is just a really talented athlete that can explode off the floor. Her form is always strong and her attacks always come with great velocity.
Ella Schomer Ella Schomer 6'0" | RS Marian | 2023 State #142 Nation MI , OH: Schomer has a great killer instinct and it comes out in her play. She had some pulse-pounding attacks at the end of sets and displays great all-around ability.
Paige Giehtbrock Paige Giehtbrock 6'0" | OH Clarkston | 2023 State MI , OH: Giehtbrock is another strong outside for this impressive squad. She was finishing at a high rate and always found new angles to attack on the court.
Sawyer Jones Sawyer Jones 6'0" | MB Berkley | 2023 State MI , MH: Jones was really adjusting to the ball well and using her athleticism to finish points even when the sets weren’t quite on point.
Michigan Elite 17 Elite
Molly Banta Molly Banta 6'0" | OH Marian | 2023 State MI , OH: Banta strung together a lot of nice finishes at the net and wasn’t afraid to go head-to-head with the other team’s top hitters.
Emma Larkins Emma Larkins 5'11" | OH Clarkston | 2023 State MI , OH: Larkins has the ability to really hammer the ball, but also is athletic enough to shift to other spots around the net. She’s got a great motor and desire to be great.
ECJ 17-1
Kaitlyn Danszczak, OH: Danszczak was one of the most complete players in the 17 Open. She has smooth movement and form on her swings, and was a big finisher from the front row or back row. Danszczak knew when to dial up the intensity, but also played with composure defensively to remain consistent with her passing.
Natalie Zemba, MH: Zemba had a really long wingspan, which allowed her to play above her opponents when her number was called. She was able to attack the set at the peak and close out key points frequently.
MVBTA 17N GR-Chuck
Isabella Harding, OH: Harding did a nice job of making the most out of out-of-system balls. Even when she had to adjust her swing to odd angles, she still put a lot of speed on her attacks. Harding also had a really solid serve that stifled opposing teams.
MVA 17 Black
Makenzie Ritsema Makenzie Ritsema 6'0" | MB Grand Rapids Christian | 2023 State MI , MH: MVA has a lot of size to work with on this squad, Ritsema being one of them. She’s able to play very long at the net, both with her attacks and her blocking. Because of that, she’s a big-time go-to option, as she can fight through tough blocks.
Raegan Lantz Raegan Lantz 6'1" | OH West Ottawa | 2023 State MI , OH – I liked the corrections I saw out of Lantz. She was able to recognize what wasn’t working for her and make quick adjustments. Her out-of-system swings were also very impressive.
Attack VBC 17U Matt
Kendall Ihm, MH: Ihm had really good form and was able to get to a lot of different balls with her long reach. That went for offense and defense, as she was a real blocking presence for Attack.
Monsters 17 Elite
Michelle Domey, OH: Domey didn’t have the height that some of her opponents did, but she knew how to dial it up at the net and wasn’t intimidated. She brought a lot of intensity to the court.
HPVBA 17-1
Adrienne Staib, MH: Staib was a highlight for HPVBA this past weekend. She was a really challenging block for her opponents, but also a player that stepped up in the clutch. Staib got the finish in a number of close sets.
