Metro 17
How they earned their bid – Took fifth in the Sunshine qualifier and an open spot trickled down to them. Earlier in the season they came in second in the Chesapeake Regional to qualify for American, losing to Paramount in the finals. Last year this group played in the National Division in the Junior Nationals and took second place. This year they have graduated to Open.
Other Major Tournament Results – 9th in Northeast Open Qualifier, 2nd in CHRVA Regional Bid Qualifier, 2nd in Mid-Atlantic Power League, 11th in Windy City Qualifier, First in Capital Hill Classic.
Players to Highlight – They have one of the more intimidating middle blockers in 6’5″ Brielle Kemavor Brielle Kemavor 6'5" | MB Charles J. Colgan | 2023 State #148 Nation VA . She has been selected to the U18/U19 National Training team. Brielle led her Colgan High School team to their first State championship last year resulting in a second team All Met selection. She is committed to BYU.
Two other girls who can occupy middle are 6’2″ Pamela McCune and 6’1″ Isabel Fowlkes. Pamela was voted the best blocker at the Capital Hill Classic and earned an honorable mention for the All Met team. Pamela has committed to Iowa State. Isabel can also play right side and is committed to University of Southern California.
Metro has two powerful outsides in 6’1″ Safi Hampton Safi Hampton 6'1" | OH Hammond (MD) | 2023 State #34 Nation VA and 5’11″ Sydney Bryant Sydney Bryant 5'11" | OH Flint Hill | 2023 State #151 Nation VA . Safi was also an honorable mention on the All Met team and last year was voted to the all tournament team at last years Junior National championship in the National division. Our number one ranked 2023 Virginia player is committed to the University of North Carolina. Sydney led her Flint Hill High School team to a State championship. The University of Maryland commit earned the vote for MVP at this year’s Capital Hill Classic.
At 5’11″ Rex Millan has some length as a setter. The UC Santa Barbara commit was another All Met honorable mention and All tournament team selection at last year’s junior national championship with Safi. Rex also is strong enough to stay front row as a hitter and blocker when playing a 6’2.
Their libero is Gabrielle Allen, voted the top receiver at Capital Hill and an all tournament team selection at the 2021 junior national championships in Las Vegas. She is committed to Howard University.
Paramount
How they qualified – They won the Chesapeake Regional Bid Championship, defeating Metro in the finals.
Other Major Tournaments – 14th in Northeast Qualifier, 9th in Sunshine Volleyball Classic, 2nd in Capital Hill Classic, losing to Metro in that match.
Players to Highlight – They have two solid outsides in West Virginia Gatorade player of the year Hannah Howard Hannah Howard 5'8" | DS/L Musselman (WVA) | 2023 State VA and Rylah Robinson Rylah Robinson 5'10" | OH J. W. Robinson | 2023 State VA , both of whom are six rotation players, but at 5’7″ and 5’10 are not giants at their position. What the left sides may lack in height is more than made up by 6’3″ right side Helen Frankovich Helen Frankovich 6'3" | RS Justice | 2023 State VA , who is the one player on the team that can neutralize the opponents left side with a strong block. She is our fourth ranked player in our 2023 Virginia rankings.
Chloe Wilmot Chloe Wilmot 5'9" | S Alexandria City | 2023 State VA set her high school team Alexandria City to a state championship a couple years ago. The Duquesne University commit is quick to the ball, mixing her sets equitably between outside and middle to keep the defense guessing.
You have to be impressed with the block reach of middle Jade Brooks Jade Brooks 6'0" | MB Oakton | 2023 State VA . The long arms can cover a large area of the court on the block and her quick feet allows her to move from pin to pin.
Sonja Meyer can play a number of different positions. She played middle for Flint Hill High School and is listed as a OH/RS for Paramount. At 6’1″ she carries some length in the front row.
