This is a very prestigious tournament in which teams actually had to earn their bid to play in it. The qualification process is super tough throughout the year and the best of the best rose to the top. Prep Dig was on hand to cover every serve, set, kill, and pass of the ball from start to finish. This series of articles is going to cover those athletes that stood out to me during the 10 days that I was covering the tournament.
This first series is going to be dedicated to the 2025 class. The entire series will be broken up by position. This article will cover some amazing setters that I saw help their team stay uber competitive due to their individual play. Let’s meet these amazing leaders.
Takyla Brown Takyla Brown 5'9" | S Weiss | 2025 State #150 Nation TX [2025] 5-9 Setter (HS: Weiss/Club: Austin Juniors/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Takyla is currently ranked as the 24th best overall prospect in the 2025 class according to our Prep Dig Texas State Rankings. She plays at Weiss High School and for the awesome Austin Juniors. I have watched her a few times this season and have written about her before. Here is a refresher of what I stated, “She is a silky smooth facilitator of a fast offense with her AJV squad. Watching her play the position makes me smile knowing that she was born to do it. That is how natural she makes it look when you pay attention to her individual play. Her posture is always balanced when delivering to her attackers. She has amazing fast twitch reflexes that let you know this youngster will be around in the top of the list for a long time. But what I love is that she is just getting started. I see a ton of potential in Miss Brown and think she can rise in the rankings as the years go by because she is a pure sniper with the ball in her hand.” The only difference in this tournament was that she was going against the best teams in the nation. But that didn’t change anything about her skills because she totally rose to the occasion and battled with her team very well. Individually she was a ghost on the court as she glided to the ball so elegantly like she was floating on air. She is a real joy to watch on the court and she is only getting started. I love how she competes and was impressed with what I saw at nationals.
Jacy Carrejo Jacy Carrejo 5'11" | S Leander | 2025 State TX [2025] 5-11 Setter/Right Side (HS: Leander/Club: Austin Skyline//Verbal: Uncommitted)
Jacy is currently ranked as the 36th best overall prospect in the 2025 class according to our Prep Dig Texas State Rankings. She plays at Leander High School and for the awesome Austin Skyline club program. I have written about her before and here is a little from the latest article, “Jacy is a very skilled setter who ran a 5-1 offense all tournament long. The ball comes out of her hands very smoothly and she is capable of setting every location along the route tree for each position with accuracy. The one aspect that will keep this team scoring at a high clip is when she delivers the outside set at a quick tempo. It is unstoppable for an entire match and she delivers it on time and accurately to her left sides.” I love how she distributes the ball to all of her amazing hitters. She moves it around very well and has a very high volleyball IQ on who to set during which part of the set. But what truly stands out is her competitiveness. This young lady is a beast on the court and doesn’t back down from anyone. I would take her into battle with me any day. I am not sure that there is a setter in her age group that runs a faster tempo to the left side so consistently. It is due to that set repeatability that I am so high on her. She will be on our rankings list for a very long time with what I saw from her production at nationals.
Bri Dunn [2025] 5-8 Setter/Right Side (HS: Clear Falls/Club: Houston Stellar/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Bri is currently an unranked prospect in the 2025 class, but is definitely on our watch list after what we witnessed at nationals. Miss Dunn plays for Clear Falls High School and club for Houston Stellar. Most of these setters are on this list due to their delivery of the ball as a distributor. Bri makes her debut to our readers due to her versatility. She is a fantastic setter and makes her team better for sure in that position, but this kiddo has an absolute cannon for an arm as a hitter. She unloaded on a few balls when I was watching and it leads me to believe that she will grace our readers a few more times when I update the rankings in a few weeks. She also has a killer serve that stifled the opposition while I watched. Stay tuned for more on Miss Dunn as we roll into the high school season.
We will be continuing with more players in each position in the next few articles that stood out to me while I covered nationals.
