There are teams that are defending champs (LCC at 1A and Andrean at 2A) and there are runners-up and previous champs (Western Boone in 2A and Brownstown in 3A in ’19, respectively). Here, we talk about the latter two programs, whom they graduate, and who steps up this fall.
WESTERN BOONE
On a magical run through the 2A southern half of the draw, the Stars have always had a great balance on offense. Yes, they graduate Maddie Hawkins, their leading attacker and do-everything all-around stud. But returning are the next three attackers, all averaging north of two kills per set. Kennedy Kiger (’23, 5-9 OH) can hit anywhere in the front row and has the size and strength to do so in 2A. Audrey Dunn (’23, 5-9 OH) has a great Boiler Juniors background, and is the steady, reliable six-rotation player most coaches covet. But my favorite returner has to be Raegan Durbin Raegan Durbin 5'10" | OH Western Boone | 2025 State #89 Nation IN (’25, 5-10 OH). A spitfire of a player and relentless in all parts of her game, Miss Durbin might be the x-factor for another Stars run in the postseason.
BROWNSTOWN CENTRAL
Don’t look now, but a previous state champion from 2019 has moved back into class 2A from 3A. One of quite a few volleyball-heavy programs moving down a class, the Braves have consistently found themselves in the conversation at the end of the season. However, with the graduation of all-state setter Reagan Nuss, top attacker Kelsey Wischmeier and libero Erin Singleton, there has to be a rebuild of some sort. To be honest, I have no idea who will set this bunch—it’s been Miss Nuss for YEARS. The attack seems to be in good hands, though, as Kalee Borden will be the player to lean on in Brownstown. Also, look for Rylee May to win the libero jersey as the first-contact anchor for this squad.
