As we gear up for the high school season, let’s check in on the camp season for some Kansas City schools.
KU Camp
Liberty Blue Jays is a team that just knows how to win. They return enough of a nucleus to be a contender again in the top class in the state. They traveled to Lawrence, Kansas to get better in the KU Team Camp and walked about champions after three days in the Crimson Bracket. Along the way, they knocked off Lawrence Free State, Shawnee Mission East, and a very good St. Pius X team. The Mullen Sisters are the gift that keeps on giving in setter Ashley Mullen Ashley Mullen 5'10" | S Liberty | 2023 State #9 Nation MO and Opposite Abigail Mullen Abigail Mullen 6'3" | RS Liberty | 2025 State #3 Nation MO . They also return to dynamic middles in Brooklyn Young Brooklyn Young 6'0" | MB Liberty | 2023 State MO and Grace Toney Grace Toney 5'11" | MB Liberty | 2023 State MO . They picked up a big transfer in Aisha Aiono Aisha Aiono 6'3" | MB Liberty | 2023 State MO from Park Hill.
The Runner-ups St. Pius X out of the Northland in Kansas City had a breakthrough season a year ago and return many impact players. They have leadership returning in the play of Avery Ashby Avery Ashby 5'10" | OH St. Pius X | 2024 State MO and Claire Mosh Claire Mosh 5'6" | DS/L St. Pius X | 2024 State MO and had a good showing at KU as well. They knocked out Timberland in the opening match of bracket play.
MO Kan Top 10
Washburn Volleyball in Topeka hosted their MO Kan Top 10 camp this week. Platte County Pirates, another team that has had a string of success over the past handful of seasons took a young team to mesh together and improve. They reported going 12-10 in sets over the course of the camp. They have some players returning who garnered quality varsity experience last fall. Middles Karysn Stehlik and Tatianna Murray return in the front row. They have some solid young players developing as well with their Junior Varsity going 18-8 overall in sets.
