So, let’s cover a few new ones here. The fourth week of the regular season has already brought us a few eye-brow raisers worthy of mention in our weekly series.
Thrillers Everywhere
Week 4’s Tuesday slate featured plenty of close contests that help demonstrate the parity of Nebraska prep volleyball.
Perhaps one of the biggest triumphs of the day was Lincoln Southeast‘s five-set victory over intra-city rival Lincoln Pius X. The Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match, saw that lead slip away, but eventually put together a clutch fifth stanza to take the victory. This brings Southeast’s overall record to 9-4 in what has been quite a redeeming start for the school’s vast collection of new faces in the volleyball program.
Southeast wasn’t the only Star City school to snag a five-set win to start Week 4. Lincoln North Star battled through quite a tiebreaker with Norfolk, and this win was in reverse sweep fashion. After dropping the first two sets, the Gators rallied back and leaned on its strong group of frontcourt hitters to win in a deciding fifth. I’ve watched this team find a different gear when everything is working smoothly, and that’s the story with North Star once again in Tuesday’s comeback win.
Small-town Nebraska is also getting in on the five-set action. In the realm of eye-brow raisers, Centura managed to hand St. Paul its first loss of the season in a five-set thriller that featured two marathon deuce sets. The Centurions move to 9-1 with this monumental mid-season victory, so this breakthrough is unlikely to be a fluke. I look forward to seeing both teams factor into the wildcard race as we approach the postseason.
Elsewhere, Humphrey St. Francis pulled out a 3-2 win against Fullerton. Like Centura and St. Paul, the Flyers have now situated themselves with only one loss heading into the late-September grind. Already, it appears that the classes with the smallest populations are producing some of the biggest pendulum swings of any class in Nebraska.
On the Triangulars
We usually cap these features off with a look at which teams found some Tuesday triangular success, so let’s do that here.
Bennington earned a pair of Tuesday W’s with wins over Bellevue West and Platteview. The talent level in this program has steadily been on the rise, and now the Badgers have an 8-4 record to show for it. In the ultra-competitive Class B gauntlet, Bennington has a good shot to hang out with the state’s top group.
Malcolm is now 11-1 after wins against David City and Milford. The Clippers overcame some stiff resistance from David City in a 2-1 win, but these tough contests usually bode well when preparing for more inevitable tests in the weeks ahead.
Lastly, we can’t help but mention that Shelton is still on a roll. The 11-1 Bulldogs added triangular wins over Axtell and Lawrence-Nelson to their resume, and this program remains one of this fall’s most formidable Class D2 teams. Once again, good luck laying out the D2 hierarchy at this point of the season. There’s a lot going on!
