Nebraska’s high school season really ramps up as we approach October, and this is as good a time as ever to review some important results. Tuesday had plenty of contests that fall in this “important” category.
So, let’s give you a rundown. We’ll also be addressing a few matchups to keep in mind on the Thursday slate.
Tuesday Tilts
This week’s Tuesday results gave us some great variety to discuss here.
Nebraska’s small-town triangulars were particularly compelling. I’m especially drawn toward Norfolk Catholic‘s pair of victories against Crofton and Lutheran High Northeast. The LHNE matchup was a three-set affair with two of those sets evolving into marathon deuce battles (33-31, 25-27). The Knights eventually prevailed with a 25-17 win in the tiebreaker and extended their overall winning streak to 12 matches. These championship favorites are still looking good.
Palmyra also made a big Tuesday statement with 2-1 wins against Elmwood-Murdock and Syracuse. It has to be physically taxing to play two consecutive nailbiters against a couple of quality opponents, but the Panthers remained resilient throughout. That 15-2 record is no fluke.
More of Nebraska’s powerhouses just kept rolling in Tuesday triangulars. Gothenburg looked dominant in its sweeps over Chase County and Perkins County, while Howells-Dodge notched two more wins against Lyons-Decatur Northeast and Madison. We’ve seen no letup from these squads as we approach the most crucial stretch of the regular season.
Perhaps the biggest happening in central Nebraska at the start of the week was Grand Island Central Catholic‘s 3-1 triumph over fellow state title competitor Kearney Catholic. It should be no surprise that these two Class C1 heavyweights produced a thriller, and the Crusaders managed to put together some key runs to take the win. A 27-25 triumph in the second set was especially important.
Another back-and-forth battle ensued when Nebraska Christian took on Lincoln Christian to start off the week. It’s easy to get crossed up when talking about these similarly named schools, but the Eagles from Central City won a 3-2 slugfest to improve to 19-4 on the year. We’ve discussed the talent on Nebraska Christian’s roster before, and now this team is really finding its stride.
In the Class A realm, a handful of Lincoln teams built on strong seasons and added another mark to the win column. Lincoln East defeated Kearney, Lincoln Pius X took down Lincoln Northeast, and Lincoln Southwest swept Lincoln North Star.
Looking Ahead
Here are a few quick hitters on some matches I’ll be following Thursday.
Humphrey St. Francis is hosting a triangular with Heartland Lutheran and the aforementioned Nebraska Christian. Let’s see if we can jumble up the wildcard standings even more after this one.
Millard West is getting set to host Lincoln Southwest in what should be an incredibly hard-hitting matchup between Class A juggernauts. Results in this class have been so difficult to predict through the first several weeks of the season, so good luck calling your shot here. Any guess is probably reasonable.
We mentioned Lutheran High Northeast in the opener, and the Eagles have a chance to rebound from Tuesday’s loss to Norfolk Catholic. St. Paul will visit LHNE in what should be a fun C1 versus C2 matchup.
Finally, keep your eyes firmly fixed on the clash between Malcolm and North Bend Central. With Malcolm having a 20-1 record and North Bend Central sitting at a perfect 20-0, it seems unfair that one team has to lose this one. Either way, this could be a preview of the Class C1 title match.
