Five set matches aplenty, dominating performances, repeat winners and the crowning of brand new champions, it was all here this weekend in Battle Creek.
Some of the top players in the state were on full display throughout Divisions 1-4 and it made for some epic volleyball. Here are my picks for the Division 3 Finals Dream Team!
Taylor Smith Taylor Smith 6'1" | S Pewamo Westphalia | 2024 State MI – Pewamo-Westphalia MVP
A heavy favorite for player of the year honors in Division 3, Taylor Smith Taylor Smith 6'1" | S Pewamo Westphalia | 2024 State MI has cemented her name as an all-time great for Pewamo-Westphalia volleyball. A player with the midas touch, Smith ran one of the most efficient offenses throughout all divisions. Smith paced the Pirates to .292 hitting percentage throughout the semis and finals and booted that up with 15 kills and 20 digs.
Dani Pohl – Pewamo-Westphalia
Alongside Smith in Pewamo’s dominating trifecta, as offensively efficiently as Dani Pohl was, she was just as impressive defensively. The complete six rotation threat, Pohl was used in just about every zone of the court for her offense. In the semifinal match, Pohl was virtually unstoppable knocking down 12 kills, while hitting above .450.
Helen Beiring – Calumet
It was nearly a Calumet versus Pewamo final, mostly due to the play of Northern Michigan bound Helen Beiring. One of the more craftier attackers in the field, Beiring knew how to follow up with some intense heat too. Almost unstoppable throughout the first two sets, Beiring near matched her kills with digs, going 21 and 18 on the night.
Shelby Ignash Shelby Ignash 6'1" | MB Cass City | 2025 State #124 Nation MI – Cass City
Cass City couldn’t get much going in their semifinal, but if you need to get anyone going, it’s Shelby Ignash Shelby Ignash 6'1" | MB Cass City | 2025 State #124 Nation MI . Upon first step onto the court, it was evident, Ignash was made for these kind of games. A middle that can pack a punch at the net, but can also rotate to play some high level defense and reception in the back row, that’s hard to come by. Ignash blasted down 14 kills on a .400 clip to go along with a team high 9 digs.
Saige Martin Saige Martin 6'0" | MB Pewamo Westphalia | 2024 State MI – Pewamo-Wesphalia
Rounding out the Pirate trifecta for Pewamo, Saige Martin Saige Martin 6'0" | MB Pewamo Westphalia | 2024 State MI had a career defining performance in the championship match. In a nearly perfect game, Martin was untouchable. The Smith-Martin connection was in full force and unstoppable. Her 13 kills on 25 swings was followed up with some killer defense with 12 digs and 3 blocks.
Holland DeVries Holland DeVries 5'10" | OH Kalamazoo Christian | 2024 State MI – Kalamazoo Christian
A steady presence on the court. Holland DeVries Holland DeVries 5'10" | OH Kalamazoo Christian | 2024 State MI is a complete package on the court. With some tight-knit ball control and a range of shots to her arsenal, DeVries had a great outing in Battle Creek. To go along with her 26 kills, DeVries put up 33 digs throughout the Final Four weekend.
Kaylie Holonen – Calumet
Only three of the four teams in Kellogg Arena played with a libero, and Kaylie Holonen made a nice statement for being one of the top guns in the field. A consistent presence in the back court, both Holonen’s ball control and defense were top tier. Holonen notched 20 digs in Calumet’s semifinal match.
