Day two was spent at Open Gym Premier in Anaheim. Both locations provided a variety of athletes that showcased their level of competition, talent and skills. The volleyball world has a lot of hidden gems and we at Prep Dig enjoy finding them.
Often in the game, hitters score and get the accolades. That point would not be possible without the execution from someone who passes and someone who sets. It was a fun sight to see a team who after the pass, set and kill the hitter acknowledged both of those players with finger pointing, yelling “all you”! The energy of teams this past weekend was amazing and communication on the court was clearly visible. Here are few liberos and setters who made plays and stood out this weekend. Recognition goes to the following players.
Brianna Reyna
Brianna Reyna
Brianna Reyna coached by Tonya Goettsche and Alisha Jamison took charge when it was necessary to help her team with a tough server or defend back row. Her performance in defense helped rallies continue. Her defensive work provided some great digs and saves. Reyna has some nice bump sets from back row that are on target. She is a great defender, and her speed makes her able to get more balls when covering the court.
Maggie Rhew Maggie Rhew 5’9″ | S Oaks Christian | 2025 State CA coached by Kyle Weindel and Buck Lindelof is a great setter, who has amazing back sets and short sets at the net for the middle to bang it. Her sets are very smooth, and the placement makes her balls hittable. She can get to a ball anywhere on the court and turn a play. Rhew has a high court IQ, knowing where to set so the block gets tooled or making a play from a dump.
Highlights
Sydney Mercado
Sydney Mercado
Sydney Mercado coached by Tim May and Gabrielle Simpson is a quick defender who also has great passes after receiving a serve. Passing is a fundamental skill that is very important to the libero position. She can pass the ball so her offense can be in system which is just as important as getting that awesome dig. She has no fear of getting down on the floor to save a play. Mercado hustles to cover her hitters and is quick to get back at base position. She can read a play and move back to defense, ready for a ball to come her way. Her hustle to get the tip, save the off-block, and chase a shanked pass shows that she plays well under pressure along with being a smart player.
Sahar Tanara
Sahar Tanara
Sahar Tanara coached by Evren Tanriverdi has great hands. With little to no ball spin, her sets would find the perfect place for her pins to capitalize. She goes up for a block and gets right back into her setting position and on the move still manages to set a hittable ball. Tanara pushes the ball around allowing for everyone to get touches, which sometimes makes placement unpredictable to her opponent.
Tessa De Albergaria
Tessa De Albergaria
Tessa De Albergaria coached by Jennifer and Scott Baklenko has great ball control skills. She is quick to read where a ball is going to go and does not hesitate to get there to make a save. She has no fear of diving on the floor to stop a ball from scoring. Her consistency at serve-receive passing, digging and no fear of diving for a ball puts her in sight as a standout libero. De Albergaria is ready to recover any tips behind her pin hitters. She has a high court awareness which is seen by how she follows the ball and covers the back row.
Hannah Brady
Hannah Brady
Hannah Brady coached by Kyle Weindel and Buck Lindelof brought a great amount of ball control to the game which helped her team run the offense. She dove and slid with one hand to save a ball from hitting the ground and hopped right back up with quickness, returning to the play. She was ready to cover the tip and her confidence could be seen in her gameplay. She provided excellent back-row coverage with her speed and agility to get to a ball.
