The CA Kickoff Recruiting Combine showed traits of power and control exhibited during and after contact. Below is a review of the noble 2023 liberos and defensive specialists that put in effort that allowed for a clear takeaway of their strengths.
Serene Joseph (2023) | DS/L
Making as flat a surface is Serene Joseph’s M.O. Any setter will run free with the height that she has the potential to create. In terms of development, that flat surface is definitely a foundation to grow. Joseph keeps sight and body on the server regardless of serving from one, six, or five. She is an active person ready for a challenge to roam a large area of the court. With that footwork, spacing of that straight platform, and watchful eye tracking a server will be key as serves are hit harder.
Destiny Castillo (2023) | 5’2″ | DS/L | Omni
The skill of passing is not complete upon contact when Destiny Castillo receives serve. Her activity after contact makes Castillo a great teammate. Specifically, there is movement toward her intended target to pass the ball and then a visualization of covering an attacker. This discipline is sure to put her in the right place at the right time. If the after-ball movement was not qualified enough, then the effort to keep the ball on her left side makes an excellent before and after.
Katelynn Shipley (2023) | 5’3”| DS/L | Club Solano Volleyball
Katelynn Shipley understands to reap what is sewn as she watches the ball to the setter keeping the game in front of her. Shipley preys served volleyballs with fluid arm action after contact. There would be little question that as the game speeds up that arm action control will maintain. With the 30 feet of the court to cover, getting her more space and repetitions will work towards the benefit of her teammates. Shipley appears eager to rove that can free up attackers to make efficient quality approaches.
Kyra Saiers (2023) | 5’4” | DS/L | Delta Valley
Letting the game happen is an aspect that Kyra Saiers exhibits on almost every pass. Her use of her body to direct the ball to a target sets her up for great platform extension. Combine Saiers and the aforementioned Shipley in a serve-receive pattern for an effective balance of court to occupy. She fits well as the descriptor of noble mentioned in the summary to begin this article. The intuition that Saiers showed glimpses of is certainly more to be mindful of her going forward.
