The CA Kickoff Recruiting Combine showed traits of power and control exhibited during and after contact. Below is a review of the eager 2024 liberos and defensive specialists that put in effort and allowed for a clear takeaway of their strengths.
Ingrid Thang (2024) | 5’0”| DS/L | Stingray Volleyball
Watching this player control the ball when the server is directly in front of her is notable. The ball is travelling through a plain straight on and she rebounds it anywhere other than straight back requires great body awareness. Part of the rebounding includes Ingrid Thang and her frequently resulting low to the ground passing performance. Blockers will have their head on a swivel when Thang is in a 2-, 3-, or 4- person formation.
Isabella Monterrosa (2024) | DS/L
Covering space from side to side are highlight plays that show up from Isabella Monterrosa. Her ease of movement makes the passing motion effortless. It is important to mention that the shuffling movement can be a difficult to master like the often-used quote, “One false move and you’re out of here”. Monterrosa likely welcomes high flying, fast paced jump serves.
Chloe Huang (2024) | 5’3” | DS/L | Encore Volleyball Club
When looking for a level, looking no further than Chloe Huang. A consistent contact point not too low and not too high levels out ball movement from a serve. A level platform gives Huang many options to position her body distance on contact. As a ruler of a straight platform, Huang is set for the high percentage attacks to middle back or strategic positioning based on a server’s tendencies.
Isabella Avila (2024) | DS/L
The athleticism of Isabella Avila combines with length make for limit less potential. From serve to 40 feet later, she can certainly make the dive to cover those 15 feet. Not only can she make the dive, but she also will. Combine that with a stance that manages the push and pull of a serve arriving then departing to the target. A picturing, analyzing, and teaching of this posture also creates a preemptive “hit me with your best shot” presence to servers.
Misu (Ngan) Nguyen (2024) | 5’5″| DS/L | SF Elite Volleyball Club
Take note of the phrase put you head down and work hard. Misu Nguyen watches the ball all the way into her platform. Her extended vision allows for low passes. And while Nguyen watches the ball to contact, she reacts quick to a moving float serve. Her focus and reaction can get her consistent passes against topspin servers.
