Wait for a serve, pass, wait for a setter, and then hit was a frequent observed activity while watching the California athletes playing in a President’s Day event at The Las Vegas Classic and NCVA President’s Day. These events brought forward a few athletes to mention their integrity and action.
LillyAnn Brewer (2025) | OH | Turlock Crush
Using a split step prior to her approach, LillyAnn Brewer is an attacker with a great hitting window for setters. Her arms can move to pick off fast tempo sets or delay on a higher tempo set. This three-rotation hitter stays in the air for a good amount of time giving her many options on what to do with the volleyball.
Sophia Alvarado (2025) | OH | Turlock Crush
A six rotation outside, Sophia Alvarado, finds herself with opportunities to swing. Consequently, the opportunities are as a ball is approaching her face on or also from the side. With those repetitions, Alvarado must be smart. She again finds herself with opportunities to also make tactical maneuvers such as a set over to zone 1.
Payton MacCuish (2026) | OH | Point West
To position oneself to make a play is often time a percentages game and Payton MacCuish is likely giving a lot of attention to standard deviation curves. Her positioning is there and a square platform should bring forth great accuracy. An active mover that shuffles very well to set up for her hitting approach.
Samantha Quire (2026) | OH | Los Angeles Volleyball Club
With glimpses of an occasional inside-out approach, Samantha Quire could be in an offense where hitters line up in the middle and umbrella out to their respective attacks spots. What might be called a Back 5 Hitter, Quire swings high and hard. Additionally, she is very aware even when not her turn in the pass, set, hit order as she will readily step in on a nontargeted pass.
Mary Oziengbe (2023) | RS | San Jacinto Volleyball Club
A lefty, Mary Oziengbe, does great with drawing her elbow back to make for the potential of a quivering attack. She touches a height of the second red on the antenna when blocking. Additionally, Oziengbe presses very well.
Mauriana Rayford (2024) |OH| #951 Figs Volleyball
To watch Mauriana Rayford might make a person think she is ready to take on an obstacle course with good time. She will dive to the ground, get up and hit an outside attack with movement that appears well-practiced. Rayford also has excellent leg use when stationary and a slower-paced ball like a free ball is coming at her.
