Triple Crown
Triple Crown never disappoints! As we mentioned previously we really enjoy the Power Pool concept. It’s fun to see some of the top teams in the country face off without the fear of losing and being knocked out of title contention. Then we love the ability for teams to play their way into the elite division.
In the Elite Division, Mavs KC 18-1, Rockwood Thunder 17 Elite, and Pohaku 15-1 all made their way to the final eight in the bracket round. All three teams were defeated in their opening match before both Mavs and Pohaku bounced back to win their 5th place match.
Dynasty 17 Black took an early bow out in bracket play but worked their way through the Elite Division 17th place bracket unscathed to walk away with only one defeat. In the Open Division bracket, Power ‘] 17 Black also had little issues winning their bracket and walking away with only one loss on the weekend. Another team that caught my attention going 5-2 with some impressive victories over the weekend was Shockwave 17-1.
In the 16U division, Dynasty 16 Black had a 13th-place finish after clawing their way to the Elite Division bracket round. After a second-round loss, they transitioned to the 9th-place bracket and were defeated. HPSTL 16 Royal had a good showing over the weekend and played themselves into the Elite 17th place bracket and finished 25th after a 5-4 showing. Like with their 17s team, Power ‘] 16-1 only suffered one setback on the weekend and won the Open Division bracket by going 8-1. Even though they finished 65th, PVA 16 Elite went 8-1.
Wrapping up with the 15s, joining Pohaku with a strong placement was Dynasty 15 Black who went 6-2 and finished in the top 20 at 19th.
St. Louis
We gave a light preview of a couple of age groups in the President’s Day Classic in St. Louis. We didn’t get to be on-site but many teams in our coverage zone made the trip or stayed home to compete in a competitive tournament.
In the 18 Club Division, Pursuit 18 National made its way to the gold bracket after going undefeated through the first two days. Their winning streak came to a halt after a first-round defeat.
Team Momentum 17 Navy was strong en route to a trip to the gold bracket in the 17 Open division. They knocked off Alliance 17 Ren in straight sets before dropping a hard-fought two-set match with Roots 171 Green. They would finish their weekend 6-2.
In the Club division, Momentum 17-1 from the southwest part of the Show Me state had a second-place finish falling short in the championship match. Top Notch 17 U Elite didn’t drop a match until gold bracket play, unfortunately, it was their first match of the day and they wouldn’t finish tied for 5th.
Pursuit 16 National had a 5th-place finish in the club division after an early exit in bracket play and had a 6-2 weekend.
Omaha
We had a handful of teams make the journey to Omaha for the annual ASICS Presidents Day Challenge.
Shockwave 18 Gold had a productive weekend finishing 6-2. Topeka Elite 18-2 also dropped two matches making it to the gold bracket.
Invasion 17 Black advanced to the silver bracket of 17 Open where they went 1-1 to finish the tournament an even 4-4. Mavs KC 17-2 went undefeated to take home the title in the 17 Club division. They dropped two sets along the way and I must say I saw Keilah Rivers Keilah Rivers 5'10" | OH Spring Hill | 2024 State KS highlights she shared on Twitter and she was a monster. Shockwave 17 Gold was impressive with a 5th-place finish. Also making it to the gold bracket was Tamales 17-1 and Invasion 17 Blue.
Mavs KC 16-2 matched the energy of their 17-2 counterparts and delivered in the 16 Club division going undefeated as well. They one-upped their sisters by only dropping one set along the journey to a title.
