Depending on what offensive system (5-1, 6-2, 4-2, etc.) is being run, a setter may or may not come off the court. Although the title of setter is the same, no two setters are alike. Each one has their own unique style. I enjoy watching setters because there are so many details about their job. Meet some setters below who play their position with confidence and lead their team when they are on the court. In order of graduating class.
Alyssa Hodges
Alyssa Hodges
Alyssa Hodges has a nice push-out to her pins. She gets under the ball which gives her better control. She has good footwork to move around the court. The timing of her sets allowed her hitters to be efficient in getting a kill. Hodges ran her offense with confidence and smart decisions. She has good hands and the strength to set from the opposite side of the court. Her sets can vary in height and speed which makes for an unpredictable attack location. Alyssa Hodges is a setter to be followed.
Victoria Esko
Victoria Esko
Victoria Esko has very smooth hands and a soft touch to the ball which creates a low-spinning or non-spinning ball. Everything with her movements, speed and, agility flowed effortlessly when she was setting the ball. She has great footwork and balance to move quickly on the court. Esko controls the tempo of the game with her communication and can make quick decisions on where to set the ball. She has a high IQ and spreads the ball around going to outside, middle, right-side, and pipe, giving all her hitters opportunities to get an attack. Victoria is a setter on the radar.
Nalani Bustos
Nalani Bustos
Nalani Bustos is quick on her feet and can get to a ball even if the pass is off. She hustles on the court and is not afraid to dig and dive to reject an attack. She has a solid defensive stance and an explosive push-off to get into position. Bustos has a nice short, quick set to her middle hitter making it easy to get on top of the ball. She communicates with her teammates vocally and with hand signals so they are aware of what set to attack or if she needs help. Nalani Bustos is a setter on the radar.
Kayla Scott
Kayla Scott
Kayla Scott has great hands that go along with great sets. She is quick to the ball and has no fear of diving to stop an attack from hitting the ground. She is fast on her feet and has good passing skills. She puts the ball in play quickly and is accurate from deep areas on the court. Scott’s speed helps her react to whatever position the ball is going. She also has a good serve that tends to get her opponents out of system. Her ball has minimal to no spin which is a hitter’s dream. Scott is only a freshman, so with three more years of growth and experience, she will only get better. Kayla Scott is on the radar.
Nadia Fan
Nadia Fan
Nadia Fan is a left-handed setter who is fast and agile being able to beat the ball to different spots on the court. She digs on defense picking up attacks and celebrates aces from her serve. She delivers hittable balls to her pins and they capitalize off the set. Fan has a confident volleyball IQ and speed that helps her better the ball by turning bad passes into hittable sets. She is only a freshman, so with three more years of learning the sport, she will continue to grow and excel. Keep an eye on Nadia Fan.
In short, a setter is a good leader on the court. They have good hands that can create consistent sets. They communicate and are quick decision makers. They are a necessity in the game of volleyball.
