Continue ReadingThe beginning of the Lone Star Qualifier started Friday, April 14, 2023, and ended Sunday, April 16th. It was three days packed with intense play, skills, and talent all under one roof. The play level is in high demand as teams from all over came to compete for a bid in Open, USA, Liberty or American. California had 29 teams participate in this qualifier and despite not placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd they showed up and played hard. There were many players who stood out on the court. Although unable to feature every single athlete in one article, I can share a few to our readers here. Introducing some superstars from the Lone Star Qualifier weekend in no particular order.
Maylynn Mitchell Maylynn Mitchell 6’0″ | OH Orange Lutheran | 2025 State #137 Nation CA is a powerhouse outside hitter who plays all the way around. She is currently ranked 15th in California and 2nd in her position. She gets in the air and uses her strength to bang the ball which is capable of going through the block or tooling it for a point. Mitchell has good defense in backrow as she can get low to the ball and make passes that are on target. She also has a good serve that can get her opponents out of system. She brings her A-game and leadership every time she is on the court.
Highlights
Kyla Firestone
Kyla Firestone
Kyla Firestone is an amazing setter who gets to the ball and has such smooth hands, delivering perfect sets. The game I watched, she jousted against a 6’1 player and scored. She has no fear at the net or getting on the ground to dig a ball. She is fast, by getting to balls at most areas of the court. Kyla has a jump set and back set that are so good they catch your eye in hopes to see what more she can do. She doesn’t hesitate to get the second ball. She is a leader on the court by communicating and being vocal.
Zoe Genetos
Zoe Genetos
Zoe Genetos does not give up when going after free balls or tips. She will at least touch the ball to keep it in play. She covers her areas on the court and is there to back up an attack at the net. Genetos will dive and dig a ball without hesitation. She made some one-handed plays. Zoe is loud and confident on the court. She can be depended upon to make defensive plays in rallies that help her team stay in the game.
Alanah Clemente
Alanah Clemente
Alanah Clemente is a 6’0, lefty, right side hitter that is only a freshman. Her future in the game is bright. She is quick to the ball and has a fast approach and swing. She would get up so fast that blockers didn’t have time to jump as seen in her photo. That made it easy for her to hit over because the block wasn’t there. She hits the ball hard and when she gets on top of it, it’s going straight down. Alanah is a player to watch grow in the game.
Brooke Hansen Brooke Hansen 6’0″ | S Etiwanda | 2025 State #135 Nation CA is such a great setter the verbal reaction to her sets are always “wow”. She is so good at her position. She is smart, she is fast, and she delivers sets that are perfect in speed and position where her pins capitalize on her talent. Hansen is currently ranked 12th in California and 2nd at her position. She has made great sets in motion from right back and middle back. Her quick sets, and short sets are easy to kill and unpredictable which makes scoring easy. Brooke is a fun setter to watch.
Highlights
Mckenna Costello
Mckenna Costello
McKenna Costello is a middle hitter/blocker who can hit from right-side. She can adjust the angle of the ball to find an open area on the court. She is tall and has high hands that penetrate the net. She blocked the ball in this picture and scored. McKenna knows how to run a slide and can score from the play. She reacts at the net by making plays from overpasses. She is utilized a lot as a middle hitter who hits from middle and right-side.
