The culminating event for the CEVA club season is the Regional tournament. Taking place at the Portland Expo center across two days, hundreds of teams took the court to secure their final standing for the season. We were able to see some of the best athletes from Oregon and SW Washington compete and took note of the stellar performances we saw. We will be featuring those athletes who impressed us throughout the coming weeks.
Without further ado, here are the 2024 pin hitters who had standout performances.
Arnett is an offensive weapon for the NPJ 17-1 National team. With good jumping abilities, she elevates when attacking to put the ball away. She is dynamic and showcased a lot of attacking range over Regionals weekend. A six-rotation hitter, she is utilized in the back row as well.
Chilukuri has found a home for herself on the right side with Athena 17-1 Gold. Standing at 6ft with a decent vertical jump, she puts up a formidable block. She has a quick arm swing and is able to hit a multitude of angles. A versatile attacker, she is more than capable of hitting on the outside and in the middle.
Dreves, the #1 2024 recruit in Washington, is a talented six-rotation pin hitter. Playing up a grade, she was the lone junior on OJVA 18-1 Gold and was instrumental in their #2 finish in Open. Standing at 6’1”, she is long, with a high reach on the ball and a whip of an arm. She proves terminal from either pin. She puts up a big block with a major reach over the net. She is also an exceptional defender, with a great read on the attack and a quick reaction time.
Fairbain’s offensive power has been critical in the Webfoot 18-1’s success this season. With an insanely fast arm swing and a decent vertical jump, she can obliterate the ball for anywhere on the court. She showcases a lot of range when attacking and is smart about which swing and shot to use.
Friesen has been an all-around asset for the NPJ 17-1 team. New to this group, she has made an immediate and lasting impact. Although a little undersized, standing at 5’8”, she is explosive with a massive vertical jump. Coupled with a fast arm swing, she absolutely unloads on the ball. Her ball control abilities are exceptional. She shines across the backrow and is a commanding presence on defense.
Gould is a talented attacker who has shown considerable improvement this club season with NPJ 18 Forefront. Although court time was limited at Regionals, playing behind some phenomenal 2023 pin hitters, she took advantage of the time she did get. A leftie, she shines on the right side. With a high vertical jump and an explosive approach, she is able to obliterate at all the angles.
Heytvelt has transitioned to the right side this season with OJVA 17-1 Gold and has proved indispensable to this team, both offensively and defensively. She can effectively score from the right side, putting the ball away down the line or sharp cross-court. Standing at 6’1” with a decent jump, she is formidable as a blocker. Creating a wall, she shut down even the toughest of opponents over Regionals.
