The culminating event for the CEVA club season is the Regional tournament. Taking place at the Portland Expo center across two days, hundreds of teams took the court to secure their final standing for the season. We were able to see some of the best athletes from Oregon and SW Washington compete and took note of the stellar performances we saw. We will be featuring those athletes who impressed us throughout the coming weeks.
Without further ado, here are the 2024 setters who had standout performances.
Brown is a high-level setter and a constant contributor to Athena 17-1 Gold. She has excellent footwork and strong hands with the ability to push the ball to the pins from great distances. Brown is not only a talented setter, but she also plays stellar defense and has a very tough float serve, making her an all-around weapon for the team.
Detrant executed a 6-2 at Regionals opposite Amy Pappas Amy Pappas 5’10” | S Umpqua Valley Christian | 2024 State OR . With a soft touch and natural hand strength, she is able to feed her hitters on even the most challenging pass. She tends to set against the grain, keeping opponents on their toes and creating one-on-one opportunities for hitters.
Doel has showcased a lot of improvement over this club season playing for Athena 17-1 Gold. She was fun to watch run the court at Regionals. With beautiful hands, a soft touch on the ball, and excellent footwork, she confidently executed a 5-1. She has honed in on her jump-setting abilities this season which has elevated her game significantly.
Gambey is a fireplug to watch play. She was a major contributor to the Excel 17 Lux team’s success in every aspect of the game. Running a 6-2, she stayed in to play across the front row as an attacker. Although only 5’7”, she has a hammer of an arm and a decent vertical jump, so she contributed offensively.
Highlights
Typically running a 6-2 opposite Elisabeth Levick Elisabeth Levick 6’1″ | S Glencoe | 2024 State OR , Guerra had to step up big time on Sunday with Levick out sick. Running a 5-1 all day, her play was critical in the team’s 4th place finish in the Open division. At 5’10”, she put up a big block on the right side. She did a good job distributing the ball and feeding her middles.
#1 in the class of 2024 for Oregon, #9 in the nation. There is no question that Haury is an incredibly talented setter. Those rankings speak for themselves. Her play was vital in the NPJ 18 Forefront team finishing 1st in Open and going undefeated. She runs an incredibly fast offense and does a great job establishing her middle hitters early.
Although Levick was only at Regionals Saturday, out sick on Sunday, she made her presence known. A dynamic athlete, she executed a 6-2 opposite Taylor Guerra Taylor Guerra 5’10” | S Westview | 2024 State OR , and stayed in to attack on the right side. Levick is quick and agile, being able to chase down passes and get underneath the ball for a strong set. She is lethal from the right side and is a major offensive weapon for the team.
McCoy did an excellent job running a 6-2 over Regionals weekend for Excel 18-1 Lux. An intelligent setter with a strong court vision, she is always finding the best matchups for her attackers. McCoy is not only a talented setter but is also a strong right-side attacker. She swings deep into the back of the court to rack up kills.
Pappas executed a 6-2 at Regionals opposite Taylor Detrant. She has shown a lot of improvement over this club season with NPJ 17-1. She has a calm yet confident demeanor on the court. She oozes athleticism and showcases good location consistency and a connection with her attackers.
Highlights
Williams was tasked with running a 5-1 over Regionals weekend for PVC 18-1. Her play was instrumental in the team finishing 1st in the CEVA 18U Division. She exuded confidence on the court and exhibited solid decision-making. She fed her hot hitters and ran lots of plays to keep opponents on their toes.
