The Lansing area can be somewhat overlooked for volleyball, but has a lot of prospects looking to climb up their respective rankings in the next year.
Here’s a look at seven players that have laid a foundation for themselves and looking to catapult to a higher level in the fall.
Kayda Herrick Kayda Herrick 5'10" | OH Parma Western | 2024 State MI , OH Parma Western (2024)
Herrick has worked hard to be a six-rotation outside hitter and her work has paid off. She’s got the ability to impact the game in all phases. Her attacking ability is diverse. Herrick hangs in the air and is able to build a big swing, or switch to offspeed midair. She can also get her hands on a lot of opposing attacks due to her ability to stay off the ground. Defensively, Herrick has good instincts and has quick reactions.
Saige Martin Saige Martin 6'0" | MB Pewamo Westphalia | 2024 State MI , MH Pewamo-Westphalia (2024)
Martin was a big part of the powerful P-W offense in 2022 that won a Division 3 state title. In this upcoming season, Martin could see a bigger offensive workload with Dani Pohl graduating. Martin has the ability to deliver some impressive highlight-reel kills. She brings the ball down at a very sharp angle and has incredible chemistry with her setter. When the ball goes her way, it’s usually the end of the point.
Jasmine Reemsnyder Jasmine Reemsnyder 5'8" | DS/L Mason | 2024 State MI , OH Mason (2024)
Reemsnyder is a really crafty outside that does a great job of taking what she’s given and making something out of it. Reemsnyder doesn’t rely on power swings, instead making a lot of smart offspeed placements, or attacking deeper into the backcourt. She can still dial up a power swing as well. Defensively, Reemsnyder also uses her high court IQ to stay poised and make solid passes during hectic points.
Marianna Rivera Marianna Rivera 6'5" | MB Williamston | 2024 State MI , MH/RS Williamston (2024)
Rivera is one that really could be in for a big breakout 2023 prep season. The 6’5” middle for Williamston has been getting better and better with each month and has the potential to dominate at the net in the Lansing area. You don’t find many 6’5” athletes that can move as well as Rivera does. She’s got a lot of agility in her swing as well, making her very difficult for opposing teams to deal with.
Taylor Smith Taylor Smith 6'1" | S Pewamo Westphalia | 2024 State MI , S Pewamo-Westphalia (2024)
Our Division 3 Player of the Year in 2022, Smith is back in 2023 to help the Pirates push toward back-to-back state titles. The 6’1” setter is already committed to Eastern Michigan and its easy to see why. She’s got the complete package as a setter to go with the intangibles of her length and athleticism. Smith plays a fast style and makes great decisions. She is able to give her teammates big swings at the ball with high success rate.
Cali Stevons Cali Stevons 5'6" | S Dewitt | 2025 State MI , L/DS DeWitt (2025)
One of the strongest programs in the Lansing area is DeWitt and Stevons has helped solidify the Panthers defense. She was a real energy player as a sophomore, getting to a lot of difficult attacks and making them look somewhat routine. She’s got a positive attitude on the floor and commands the defense well. Her serve is improving and she’s getting better with her instincts each match she plays.
Ava Wilcox Ava Wilcox 5'10" | OH Lansing Catholic | 2024 State MI , OH/DS Lansing Catholic (2024)
Wilcox is a scrappy player that battles hard at the net. She can outwork taller hitters, but still has the athleticism to power her way through blocking. She’s also got defensive instincts that make her a reliable asset in serve receive. Wilcox is able to transition well from taking on a serve to then getting set for a point-ending attack.
