Division 2 had a lot of high caliber prospects to vote for, and over 53,000 votes were cast over a 7-day stretch.
Here’s the five that received the most votes in this year’s D2 POY poll.
Mya Kattula Mya Kattula 5'11" | S Notre Dame Prep | 2025 State MI , Notre Dame Prep OH/S (34.27%)
The Notre Dame Prep junior really stepped up in a big way for the Irish as a sophomore, and will have to do so again this fall. With graduating the team’s other starting setter, as well as the kill leader, NDP will be in need of a go-to player to rise to the occasion. Voters think Kattula can handle that challenge, as she received over 18,000 votes to win our preseason POY poll. Kattula has a lot of natural gifts for the game. She’s technically sound as a hitter, passer and setter. She has a feel for the game that is a staple of NDP volleyball. She’s also in a program that’s known for developing elite setter/hitter combo players. Don’t be surprised to see Kattula’s name a lot this fall. Should the Irish make another run to Battle Creek, she’s a great candidate to be Player of the Year.
Clara Gyomory Clara Gyomory 5'10" | RS North Branch | 2024 State MI , North Branch OH (26.64%)
The entire North Branch starting lineup are candidates to win Player of the Year in 2023. The defending D2 champions are stacked with talent and experience. However, it is Gyomory that emerged as the leading vote-getter of the Broncos. The senior led North Branch in kills last season and was a consistent presence on the block. Her hitting has likely only improved, which is tough considering she hit over .320 in 2022. Gyomory is a big reason why North Branch is the clear favorite to win the D2 title again in 2023.
Grace Spoelma Grace Spoelma 5'8" | S Grand Rapids Christian | 2024 State MI , Grand Rapids Christian S (10.09%)
Grand Rapids Christian will have some questions in 2023, mainly with developing new go-to hitters. One area the Eagles should have no concern is the setter position. Spoelma is a senior setter that led the team in assists in 2022 and was one of the top servers on the squad as well. A lot of big-match experience on her side, Spoelma will be relied on to help elevate the game of her inexperienced teammates in 2023. If she can do that, GRC will again be a top D2 contender.
Kadie Tarasiewicz Kadie Tarasiewicz 6'0" | MB Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Preparatory | 2025 State MI , Orchard Lake St. Mary’s MH (6.19%)
Orchard Lake St. Mary’s has been a program building for the past three years to get to this moment. Now, it finally has established seniors to lead the program that started in 2020. Tarasiewicz is just a junior, but will be one of the veteran and experienced players the Eaglets can rely on. The 6-foot middle has big power with an explosive arm swing. She also covers a lot of space on the block, able to extend her large wing span to slow down a lot of opposing attacks. This club season she has added a lot of high-IQ plays to her arsenal to make her an even more dangerous player.
Sophia Allen Sophia Allen 6'0" | OH Grand Rapids Catholic Central | 2024 State MI , Grand Rapids CC OH (4.53%)
The senior for Catholic Central stands nearly 6-foot and brings a lot of consistency to the position. Allen is able to put a good swing at most balls that come her way, including out-of-system balls. She’s patient and aware, but can still dial up a powerful swing quickly. Allen covers a lot of space on her side of the net, which allows her to generate velocity that is difficult to slow down. Her senior year could be a big one, as CC has established itself as a D2 player in Michigan.
