It’s not every day you find someone this accomplished at such a young age.
This weekend marked the conclusion of the 2023 MHSAA Volleyball season. It also marked a pretty serious milestone for one of the top players in the country.
After winning the AAU 15 Open National Championship in 2021, Campbell Flynn Campbell Flynn 6'2" | S Mercy | 2025 State #4 Nation MI had all of the attention on her. Fast forward to this season, Flynn would miss a significant portion of the season because she was overseas battling with Team USA. In those efforts, Flynn not only paced USA to place within the top 5 of the U21 World Championship, but she led them to a World Championship in the U19 championships in Croatia. This weekend, Flynn would bulldoze her way to an unprecedented Division I State Title.
Similarly enough, this weekend’s victory would go much similarly to the way that she won the World Championship in August. Down 0-2 to the favorites, just to rally back and win 3-2.
After a pretty smooth road to the Elite 8, it was expected to be a total brawl for which Catholic League member would advance to the Final Four. Surprisingly enough, Flynn and the Marlins made quick work of rival Marian. We’d once again be questioning though, could lightning strike twice?
It was looking unlikely in the semifinals against Clarkston. In the opening set, the Marlins were down as much as 6 points, whereas the other team needed just 5 to clinch the opener. Leave it to Flynn to ignite the spark, Mercy would go on a 11-3 point run to secure the first set. The World Champion would end the set with 5 kills on 5 attempts to mark the comeback. After this major wave of success, it was all Marlins for the rest of the match, ultimately sweeping Clarkston in the Final Four. Flynn would finish with 8 kills, 23 assists and 9 digs in this one.
Now, could Flynn really do it? Could she secure Mercy their second state title in school history? The first since the historic 2019 championship that featured current Big Ten Superstars, Julia Bishop (Michigan State) and Jess Mruzik (Penn State)? It was looking even more unlikely than the Clarkston match. Not only did Forest Hills Northern have a 0-2 set lead on the Marlins, but they had stumped them in the opening set 25-13. Leave it to this player to find a way.
In one of the biggest, and most entertaining comebacks, in the last several years, Campbell Flynn Campbell Flynn 6'2" | S Mercy | 2025 State #4 Nation MI would put this program on her back and run away. Reverse sweeping FH Northern in the process. Flynn would end the match with 5 kills, 41 assists and 15 digs. In the last 3 sets, Flynn had Mercy operating on an exceptional hitting efficiency en route to the title.
Mercy finishes the season 30-14-3. The Nebraska commit finishes the season with over 400 assists, 100 kills and 100 digs.
Congratulations to Campbell on a phenomenal year.
