Here are some teams and players who definitely are turning heads due to their play. This series will highlight some players who we have seen in person and that we are adding to our list to watch this season.
Absolute 15 Black
I was able to watch this squad at the Triple Crown NIT tourney in February and they were firing on all cylinders throughout the tourney. I was really amazed by the play of libero Lucy Tusher. Not only was she passing nails with her platform, but the way she was using her hands for overhead balls was truly astonishing. Not very many young players are capable of taking hard-driven attacks with their hands, but she made it look very easy and this is one huge reason why she is now on my watch list. Setter Rubi Silva Rubi Silva 5'10" | S Berkeley | 2027 CA was moving the ball well to all of her hitters getting them involved in the offense. I liked how she spread the ball around to keep the defense off-balanced. Outside hitter Kennedy Whyte Kennedy Whyte 6'0" | OH Monte Vista | 2027 CA is the real deal and the offense definitely flows through her. The sheer power in her right arm is one big reason why a lot of college coaches were around her court. I loved how she has amazing top spin on the ball with her solid hand contact. That top spin can also be seen in her big and powerful jump serve that she rattles off for multiple points at a time. There is no doubt that she will be on our State Rankings and it will be fun to compare her with other great attackers in her grad class. On the right side, lefty opposite Blake Cussen Blake Cussen 5'11" | RS The Branson School | 2027 CA can throttle the ball well to keep the attack spread out. She is another solid option that was fun to watch on this squad. Middle Abigail King put on a hitting display as she routinely went around the block no matter where they lined up. With her ability to turn on the ball to both corners, this team will be hard to stop. We will have more details on other players on their team soon. Stay tuned.
Tstreet 15 Asics
Proving to be one of the best teams in the age group this season, Tstreet is ballin. They have a roster filled with stars. The brightest stars to me were both middles. Megan Hodges Megan Hodges 6'4" | MB Ladera Ranch Middle School | 2028 CA has enormous amounts of power in every part of her body. Her approach is explosive and her arm swing can bring some heat. As an all around middle, I am not sure if there is anyone better. Her lateral movement while patrolling the net and her footwork during transition were top notch. Her counterpart Emma Kingston Emma Kingston 6'4" | MB Mater Dei | 2027 CA was huge at the net. She also has substantial power in her upper body and can block at a high level. Setter Ally Fausett was born to be a setter. Her frame, footwork and hand contact are all exactly what you would want in a high level setter. The fact that she is only a freshman will get a lot of college coaches excited for the future. From what I saw in person, her stock will continue to rise in the coming years. Outside hitter Ella Olson is able to play all six rotations and this team even runs plays for her while she is in the back row due to her solid hand contact and ball control. This team has all of the items you want in a championship contender. We will be watching them very closely as the season continues and you should also.
