Austin’s All-Showcase Team: Iowa Exposure Tour

My role as the Nebraska "outsider" makes this talent pool even more compelling, as I can make countless discoveries and see what's going on across state lines. The Hawkeye State did its part to make a lasting impression at the Iowa Exposure Tour.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>We have no "rules" regarding the overall size and make-up of our all-showcase team, so I'll take some creative liberties along the way. Anderson, who churned out over 200 kills for Janesville this fall, proved to be a six-rotation asset when she stepped into the showcase spotlight. Most outside hitters try to expand their highlight tape through hitting lines, but Anderson took the initiative to display her pinpoint passes, too. She meshed well with any passer lined up next to her and effectively covered seams in the block during scrimmages. Not only was Mescher keeping balls off the floor, but her steady platform guided the ball to her target. Physicality isn't the only thing working in Evans' favor, though, as the Prince of Peace Catholic sophomore also wields quick footwork and refined blocking technique at the net. Most of all, Evans was a lethal slide hitter when she worked through early positional drills in Des Moines. Schluckebier brought that kind of influence to whichever side of the net she joined for Sunday's team competitions. She was a steady, unflappable distributor who wasn't afraid to dish against the grain to faraway hitters. Schluckebier also holds her ground on the right pin and is a deceptive second-ball attacker. Subbert used these friendly confines to flex her power and imposing frame in the middle. She formed cohesive connections with whichever setter she was paired with, producing floor-denting kills in multiple frontcourt gaps. Stanfel's vocal leadership was a big hit among showcase participants, but the Dowling Catholic sophomore brought the skills to back it up. We rarely see right-side hitters with such an eagerness to lock in for passing and defensive drills. Her effortless elevation and snappy arm swing paid dividends throughout her Exposure Tour stay. Suhr has the rare ability to get on top of the ball quickly despite being one of the longest athletes in the gym. We didn't know what to expect from this Pleasant Valley standout who had played hybrid roles as an outside hitter and a defensive specialist. Ohda promptly put on one of the hardest-hitting attacking displays in Des Moines last weekend. That description encompasses the balanced game Johnson brought to the Iowa Exposure Tour. She dished out a smooth, hitter-friendly offense during six-on-six action, but she could also make her own splashy plays as a hitter.
