Emerald City 2026: Day 1 Defensive Gems

Matches at the Seattle Convention Center were won in the transition game, and these players helped to trigger their teams' scoring. Instead, they drop their center of gravity, maintain a balanced base, and calmly pass the ball cleanly, allowing their setters to make a play, keeping the rally alive and exhausting the opposing attackers.      Williams plays with positive confidence, supporting her teammates and making difference-making plays, big and small. 208 17 Elite posted a 2-1 record, winning two matches in three to finish second in their pool on the 17/18 Open Division. In one sequence against SIVBC 18, Williams one-handed stab of a tip led to a sweet one-handed back set that 208's right side hammered down for the kill.     Bentosino plays up on the Space Needle 17 Blitz team and handles anything that hitters can send her way. Blitz starts the tournament 3-0 and will face multiple challenges in day 2 pool play, including an experienced WVBA 18 Adidas squad and a feisty, talented SIVBC 16 Thunder squad. Bentosino is fun to watch at the libero spot; she digs up rockets and off-speed and has terrific recognition and execution in serve receive.     Orozco and her PSVBA 16 Legacy squad pushed to a 3-0 record on day 1; the Emerald Ridge 2028 plays with toughness and intensity, always planted and balanced as hitters swing. She can push hard without taking a false backward step, and Orozco almost always tracks down the tip to the middle that looks like it's falling in for an easy point.     Rahm had a terrific start to the weekend for CPA 16 Drew, helping her team to a 3-0 record on day one. The Ridgline 2028 prospect is a gritty player with an excellent work ethic. Rahm does not want a ball to touch the floor; she will sell out and chase a deflection into the chairs if need be. The team and Rahm will have a tough challenge on day two, with PSVBA 16 Legacy looming as the last match of pool play.     Jang and her Spaceneedle 16 Kala team posted a 3-0 record to start the tournament. The lefty libero wasn't in the libero jersey every match; SNVF worked creative line-ups throughout the day. Against AAVA 16 Storm, Jang worked in for three rotations in the back row and was sharp in serve, receive, and defense. Later, versus Podio she was back in her familiar libero jersey, scooping up tips and shots when attackers tried to go off-speed.     Stewart and her PJVBC 16 National team battled to a 2-1 record, dropping a close crossover match to CPA Drew 16 in 3. The 2028 libero from Graham-Kapowsin is all energy and positive emotion. She keeps her hitters covered and pumped up after a big kill. Stewart tracks the ball nicely in serve receive and has a smooth platform she can adjust to find the right angle on difficult serves.
