2020 Prep Season Preview: Division 2’s top middle hitters
In a state full of talented middles, Division 2 may bring the best of any division.
Length, athleticism and explosiveness define all of the players on this list.
Here’s a closer look at the top middles for Division 2.
Aubrey O’Gorman Aubrey O’Gorman 6'3" | MB Lakewood | 2021 State MI , Sr. Lakewood
O’Gorman has been a dominant middle in the state for years. She heads into her senior season having guided Lakewood to the D2 finals last fall while earning First Team All-State honors. The Michigan State commit had over 500 kills in 2019 and hit over .420 for the season. She also added over 150 blocks. O’Gorman has tremendous explosiveness at the net and pairs that with her 6’3” frame. Nobody has found a way to stop her yet.
Serena Nyambio Serena Nyambio 6'2" | MB Country Day | 2022 State #17 Nation MI , Jr. Detroit Country Day
An ever-improving player, Nyambio really showcased her all-around talents in the last year. Recently committing to Michigan, Nyambio is coming off a 2019 prep season that saw her earn Second Team All-State honors as a sophomore. She had 261 kills with 140 digs, 119 blocks and 46 aces. Nyambio can play well above her opponents and has great instincts at the net.
Abby Olin Abby Olin 6'3" | OH Coopersville | 2021 State MI , Sr. Coopersville
Olin really shined in 2019 as she helped Coopersville be one of the top teams in Division 2. The Michigan State commit was First Team All-State last fall after racking up 519 kills and 173 blocks. Olin has tremendous court vision, knowing where the play is heading and where she needs to be to finish a point with a kill or block. Olin also has the competitive fire to compete against anyone.
AJ Ediger AJ Ediger 6'2" | MB Hamilton | 2021 State MI , Sr. Hamilton
Ediger was a First Team All-State selection in 2019. The Iowa basketball commit uses her diverse skills and athleticism to be a standout at the net. She explodes with power on her attacks and uses her reach and footwork to get into great blocking position defensively. Ediger is one of the elite athletes in the state and will continue to make a name for herself on the volleyball court.
Olivia Webber, Sr. Marshall
Marshall earned Second Team All-State honors in the 2019 season. The Redhawks were a district winner last fall thanks in part to Marshall. She was a force on offense and defense for Marshall. She always looks smooth on the court and keeps a calm focus when making the necessary plays to end a point.
Allison Hall Allison Hall 5'11" | MB Montague | 2021 State MI , Sr. Montague
Hall is player that can also move to the outside, but it’s her ability to finish points on defense that really stands out. She had over 110 blocks last fall to earn Third Team All-State honors. She also has a big swing that allowed her to put down over 450 kills. Despite not being as long as some of her peers in the middle, Hall makes up for it with her explosiveness and competitive drive.
Kayla Giroux, Jr. Flat Rock
Giroux had a nice sophomore season for Flat Rock, a D2 district champion. The Rams turned to her pretty regularly and she finished with 328 kills while hitting over .300. Her blocking was also top-level, as she amassed 168 for the season. Giroux showed an ability to be dominant at the net and is only going to be better in 2020.
Day’Anna Marr, Sr. Adrian
Marr was a dynamic two-way player for Adrian in 2019. She was a strong finisher at the net when her number was called, and also put up a block that was challenging for opponents to get past. Marr sees the court very well and is ready to take that next step in her senior season.
