The listed consisted of players who would have contributed to their respective varsity teams had not been for an injury or other circumstances. The one silver lining we can take from the current pandemic is many more games are available for live stream. This means we at Prep Dig Mo can see more players and teams than we’ve been accustomed to. Last week we were able to check out Lee’s Summit host St. Teresa’s Academy. Lee’s Summit is coming off a stellar 2019 season and return many key pieces to that squad in Kendall Boone, Ashlyn Bellamy Ashlyn Bellamy 6'1" | OH Lee's Summit | 2023 State MO , Samantha Nguyen, and Jordan Stout to name a handful. One name that is missing is sophomore setter Makya Clayton. She would have been one of those key pieces but a dislocated knee cap forced her to miss her freshman campaign. After a successful rehab, she returned to the court this fall and you can quickly see the excitement surrounding her last season. We were able to catch up with Clayton and ask her some questions.
Makya Clayton, Lee’s Summit High School, Setter, 5’6″, 2023; Club: PVA
Prep Dig Mo: How excited are you to return to the court and be back with your team?
Clayton: I was super stoked to get back on the court this year, especially since our season was so up in the air.
Prep Dig Mo: What were some of your thoughts or what went through your head after suffering your injury?
Clayton: Going through any injury is always hard, but was especially tough for me sitting on the sidelines and watching my team play without me. I always want to be on the court. Getting a starting spot on varsity during my freshman year was an honor, then having to sit out was tough on me mentally.
Prep Dig Mo: What motivated you to get healthy and back on the court?
Clayton: My biggest motivation to get healthy was seeing my teammates succeed and wanting to be a part of it. Also sitting on the bench is boring!
Prep Dig Mo: Tell us a little about your recovery and the process that went into it.
Clayton: Lots of physical therapy and ice. It was a long and slow process with lots of strength training and working myself back into sports.
Prep Dig Mo: What are you most excited about entering this season?
Clayton: I’m excited about getting the opportunity to play with my amazing teammates and getting to connect with them more. I’m also looking forward to making friends with the new freshman.
Prep Dig Mo: What are some of your individual and team goals you set?
Clayton: One team goal we have is to work hard and come together during tough times. One individual goal I have is to help my teammates and always do my job to the best of my abilities to help them succeed.
