Therefore, I wanted to begin a similar tradition and I am proud to announce Deck The Scout’s Super Squad for the Class of 2022 Kansas Volleyball Players. As a history teacher, I also like acronyms and I thought DTSSS (D,T, Triple S) just sounded cooler than the All-Deck Team. Also, in the tradition of Madden, I am only including players that I saw play in person during the 2020 season.
I managed to see more than 30 high school teams in my first year as a Senior Scout for Prep Dig Kansas. I would have liked to have seen more, but due to my football scouting and college teaching duties, time and date commitments were sometimes limited. Cancellations and schedule changes that were COVID-19 related did not help any either.
This is the third and final installment of Deck’s Super Squads as the Class of 2021 and Class of 2022 were released prior to this report. Sub State tournaments start tomorrow, with quarterfinal match-ups to be played on Tuesday, October 27.
Deck’s Super Squad: Class of 2023
LS, Brooklyn DeLeye, 6’1”, Washburn Rural – DeLeye, a sophomore left side hitter is a talented two-way player. She shows the ball no mercy when she strikes it. The sophomore had 15 kills and 5 digs in a Washburn Rural win over Topeka High. She is tall and has a huge swing. She will be recruited by Division I programs.
OH, Aubrey Duncan, 6’0”, Lawrence Free State – Duncan knows how to fill up a box score. She amassed 10 kills, 12 serve receptions, seven digs, four service aces in a best-of-five-set victory over Olathe West. Duncan finished the regular season with 210 kills and 39 blocks. She will be highly sought after as a recruit by four-year programs.
MH, Sawyer Thomsen, 6’2”, Lawrence Free State – Thomsen is a lean, mean, blocking machine. She led the Firebirds with six blocks and 15 kills in a match against Olathe West. She finished the regular season with 44 blocks and 170 kills. She also had 44 service aces in 2020.
OH, Ava TeStrake, 6’4”, Olathe West– TeStrake is a solid blocker and will for sure continue to improve her blocking skills with more varsity experience. TeStrake also can play both the front row and back row. She finished with eight kills, seven digs, and 11 serve receptions in a match against Lawrence Free State. TeStrake during the regular season amassed 154 kills, 130 digs, 20 service aces.
MH, Kacie Akers, 6’1”, Rural Vista – Akers is a member of the Class of 2023 and will certainly have a spot in the Prep Dig Kansas ranking for that class when it is released. Akers does not have a huge jump, but she does have a long reach. She finished the regular season with 167 kills and 35 blocks.
DS, Ava Deguzman, 5’6”, Junction City – Deguzman is a triple-threat player. She can hit, serve, and receive. She finished the two-match night against Topeka West and Seaman with 23 digs, four kills, and one block. She also excels in the classroom with a current GPA of 4.1. She looks like a solid NAIA recruit.
