The three venues, the Greater Richmond Convention Center (GRCC) and the two Richmond Volleyball Club’s two outstanding facilities: Byrdhill and Stonebridge. The RVC Byrdhill played host to the 12s and 17s Club’s second division. RVC Stonebridge hosted the second division and part of the division 1 17s club playoffs. The 18’s, 13s and remainder of the 17s division played day two at the Convention Center.
The 18 and 17 Open Division continued with their round robin play in their 9 team pools. Maryland Juniors continued to dominate with a 6-0 record, losing one set to Paramount, on the weekend. The battle for second is a tight contest with Coastal Hampton Roads 18 National, Paramount VBC 18-1, and Vienna Elite 18 L with 4-2 records. Coastal is leading in the sets win-loss record 9-4, Paramount is 9-5 and Vienna is 8-6 on the weekend. RVC 18 National is the only other team with a winning record at 3-2 on the weekend. Pool play concludes Monday with the first match starting at 8am.
Richmond Volleyball Club 17 National is leading the way in the 17 Open division, the lone blemish in a three set loss to Vienna Elite 17 F yesterday morning. Paramount VBC 17-1 is currently in 2nd with a 4-2 record (10-4 in sets). Maryland Juniors is currently 3rd with a 4-2 record (8-5 in sets). Roanoke United 17 Red is the other team with a winning record at 3-2. Pool play concludes Monday with the first match starting at 8am.
The 18 Club Division featured pool play for the first and second divisions at the GRCC. Division 1 was split into three pools of 4 teams. After the second day of pools, the teams were split into their championship divisions ranging into Gold, Silver, Bronze and Flight Divisions 1, 2 and 3. MVSA 18 Chaos, Blue Ridge VA and Roanoke United 18 Red will battle for the championship in the Gold Division. The Silver bracket consists of Horizons Edge 18 Black. ODVA 18 National and Baltimore Elite 18 Navy. River Valley 18 Elite, Shenandoah Valley Renegades 18-1 and Bay Area 18 Lightning will battle for Bronze. Flight 1 will be Venom 18-1, Virginia Volleyball Academy 18-1 and Major Impact 18-1 close out the top division finishers. Matches will be played at RVC Stonebridge family Monday morning.
Flight 2 is a four team semifinal playoff with River Valley 18 Blue, Braddock Road 18-1, CORE VA Titanium and Williamsburg 18 National will battle for the flight 2 championship. Flight 3 includes Monument 18-1, Colonial 18 Purple, RVC 18 Slate and Coastal Hampton Roads 18 Regional. All matches will be help at the RVC Byrdhill facility.
The 17 Club division had a greatly competitive day two to work their way into championship Monday. The first division Braddock Road 17-1, New Kent 17-1 Coyotes, and Vienna Elite 17 W won their pools to advance to the Gold bracket. Baltimore Elite 17 Navy, Coastal Hampton Roads 17 National and Virginia Volleyball Academy 17-1 finished second in their pool to advance to Silver. The Bronze bracket will consist of Coastal VA 16 Dexter, Horizons Edge 17 Black, Outbreak 16 Black. The first division rounds out the first division wi
th Colonial 17 Purple, Maryland Juniors 17 Elite Yellow, and Venom 17-1 teams.
The second division teams will battle for the championships for Flight 2, 3 and 4 divisions. Dulles Youths U16 Thunder, St James 17 Navy and Xzone 17 Red Elite will battle for Flight 2 Championship starting at 11am at the Convention Center. Flight 3 features an intraclub battle with ODVA’s 17 National and 17s East Coast teams taking o River Valley Junior 17 Elite. Flight 4 will round out the 17 club division with Battle Volleyball Club, CORE VA Titanium, Dulles Youth 17 Thunder and Major Impact 16-1.
MVSA Wahoo!, Blue Ridge 13-1, Colonial Volleyball Club 13 Purple and Vienna Elite 13 L all have advanced to Gold for the 13’s club division. MVSA enters as the top seed with an undefeated tournament thus far. The Silver division includes RVC Slate, River Valley 13 Blue, Coastal VA 13 Gina and Dulles Youth Sports 13 Thunder. Bracket play starts at 8am Monday morning with the champions matches scheduled for 11am.
The U12 Division had their 6 teams play into a final Gold and Silver pool for the tournament. The Gold Bracket is headlined by Albemarle Regional 12-1 team who stands undefeated entering the Gold playoffs. They are joined by Beach Elite 12 Black and Colonial Volleyball Club 12 Purple. The silver division playoffs will match up RVC 12 Chipmunks, River Valley 12 Blue and Vienna Elite’s 12-1 teams.
Volley by the James concludes on Championship Monday at the three sites with champions being crowned for all age groups and division s. The tournament has run with great care for participant safety and Covid concerns. Work team areas are all disinfected after each match and game balls are rotated and sanitized. Team camping areas are spread out and a variety of safety points are required for entry into the event. All in all, it’s been a great event, as always run by the Richmond Volleyball Club staff and tournament personnel.
