This next group of girls’ are lethal offensive options. They have all the shots and are creative to ensure their team is able to score. Many girls that play outside or middle can also play as an opposite. This list will be looking at those who have opposite as their primary position. Let’s take a look at the top opposites returning.
Seniors
Jane Fleetwood (Columbia)
Fleetwood was one of the few bright spots on a Columbia squad last season. She’s a very versatile hitter by being very creative with her shots and keeping opponents off balance. It may be cross-court, down-the-line, tip, cut shot, etc. She will be dominant again this year after 100 kills and 214 digs last season.
Tracey Illderis (West Orange)
Ilderis will be looked upon as a senior leader for her younger teammates. Ilderis finished with 67 kills and 110 digs which was middle of the pack on a very deep West Orange team. Watch for her numbers to jump immensely.
Jerone Pierre (St. Vincent)
Pierre is one who has been sitting behind patiently and waiting her turn. She is the one I think will have the biggest jump in her statistics. She had 18 kills as a junior, don’t expect it to be anywhere near that number again this season.
Catherine Collins (Payne Tech)
Collins is a part of a very deep Payne Tech squad with so many returning. She sat behind for most of the season but showcased her potential with 43 kills and 80 digs. She will be stepping up into a more prominent role this season.
Teagan Hales (Newark Academy)
Hales has been the primary option for Newark Academy. She had a monster junior campaign with 149 kills and 107 digs. Her ability to anticipate where her opponents are going to move to stop her is what makes her a great opposite. She can go around, over or even through the block at times.
Junior
Alex Reesch (Montclair)
Reesch patiently has been waiting her turn to get some significant playing time. Her athleticism is what makes her a solid opposite in my opinion. She will be a problem this season for opponents. In her limited appearances, she still managed 16 kills.
These ladies are going to make major impacts this season. Many of them are stepping up into new roles so watch their numbers to have major jumps.
