Nearly 100 teams descended to the sunshine state to play for a bid to play in the USAV Boys Open Championships held June 30-July 7, 2021 in Kansas City, Missouri. The tournament is split into the Open Division for 14s, 15s, 16s, 17s and 18s and the USA Division for the 17s and 18s age group. The Open winners will earn automatic bids into Nationals while other teams can participate in the USA and Club divisions.
Some of Virginia’s elite players will be on hand at the event from the dozen teams that are attending from the Commonwealth. Coastal Virginia Volleyball Club, Coastal Hampton Roads (CHR), Richmond Volleyball Club (RVC) and Old Dominion Volleyball Academy (ODVA) all sent teams to Florida for the first bid tournament of the season. Eight VHSL All-State players will be on hand along with some other top prospects.
Here are some players to watch for the weekend:
Coastal Hampton Roads: Utility Hitter Brandon Leary, Middle Hitter Evan Snodgrass, Middle Hitter Benjie Weichert and Setter Ayden Keeter. The 18’s from Coastal Hampton Roads is an extremely competitive and athletic group with Snodgrass and Leary committed to George Mason after graduation and Weichert committing to the Barton Bulldogs, a perennial Conference Carolinas powerhouse. They should be in the top half of finishers of the 18’s .
Coastal Virginia Volleyball Club: Outside Hitter Liam French, Setter Robert Fowler, Libero/Outside Hitter Chris Peters, Middle Hitter Daniel Hurley, and Libero/Outside Hitter Riley McCracken. Coastal is loaded with college talent and National Team Pipeline caliber players with multiple players already committed to nationally ranked Division 1 programs. They should be in the mix for the Gold Bracket this weekend.
Richmond Volleyball Club: Outside Hitter Mitchell Schuler, Opposite Jackson Newcomb, Libero Phillip Page, and Outside Hitter Deklan Wingo. RVC has very solid talent throughout their program and should be in the mix for the silver or gold contention. All four are prospects for college programs if they choose that path.
Old Dominion Volleyball Academy: Setter Connor Pinney, Middle Hitter Isaiah Oriente, Outside Hitters Ian Wagenhauser and Drew Barfield. The team is powerful and athletic with some high caliber players. They should be on par with RVC and CHR in the mix between Gold and Silver competition. All four have peaked the interest of multiple college coaches throughout the United States.
