Players are tying to get back into the swing of things especially after it being two years since their last high school boys volleyball competition. The teams that are able to make the adjustments and adapt in an unprecedented situation will come out on top. Let’s take a look at some teams I believe have the best opportunity to make statements in 2021.
Fair Lawn
Fair Lawn is a squad looking to continue their winning ways from 2019. The 2019 squad was a dominant 36-4 and showcasing their ability to be at the top of NJ. The 2021 squad has gotten off to a solid 2-0 start. Gil Zyndorf will be the player to watch if Fair Lawn maintains their position at the top. I see them picking up right where they left off.
Kearny
Kearny will be looking to build off a decent 2019 where they went 16-6. They won their only match this week convincingly. The 2021 squad are upperclassmen and should be able to showcase some poise as many had a taste of the spotlight in 2019. Outside hitter Santiago Lopez will be the focal point of the Kearny offense. He’s a true all-around hitter so expect Kearny to ride his live arm all-season.
Livingston
A team looking to impress is Livingston. They have been challenging themselves early-on in the season with tough matchups to prepare them for the postseason run. Livingston is presently 2-1 on the year, their loss came to Bridgewater-Raritan, who many see as true state contenders. Another upperclassmen squad that know the regular season prepares you for the postseason run when it matters. Zack Choi is the operator of the Livingston offense and does so with high-quality play.
Southern
Southern is like Fair Lawn by trying to find and maintain the dominance they had in 2019. Their high-touted sophomores from that squad who only lost 3 matches are now seniors ready to carry the torch for one more run at state. Tommy Deakyne is one to keep your eyes on as the one to step into the top option offensively as an outside hitter.
West Milford
Lastly, we have West Milford. A team that may have been deemed as a disappointment in 2019. However, they played a ton of underclassmen on that squad and now those guys are ready to prove doubters wrong. Milford have three guys that can punish you from anywhere on the court led by Matthew Christ. West Milford have looked determined in their first two matches on the season.
