The LPS Volleyball Classic will bring in elite teams from Lincoln and beyond as championship contenders continue to test themselves against the state’s best. With some much great volleyball set to take place at Lincoln Northeast and Lincoln Southeast, this is definitely an event I plan to lurk at this weekend.
So, let’s give a quick synopsis of all the pools and competitors that will be battling at this event. Fill your calendars accordingly!
Lincoln Southeast Pools
The Knights will host a pair of intriguing groups with some nice regional representation.
Pool A
The top seed in Pool A is LSE’s cross-town rival, Lincoln Southwest. It has been an impressive journey to a 6-0 record for the Silver Hawks, most recently sweeping Grand Island on the road this week. This team wants to prove that they’re a force to be reckoned with in Class A, and they’ll have a chance to compete against two other Class A foes in the opening pools: Papillion-La Vista and Lincoln Southeast.
It has already been an eventful season for Papio, and the Monarchs have shown some great fight even when the final result doesn’t go their way. The same can be said of the Knights, a team that is working to incorporate some young players into the lineup.
Elkhorn infiltrates this group from Class B. The Antlers are off to a solid start with their new-look lineup and hope to take another step forward in Lincoln.
Pool D
This pool has the potential to be a barnburner.
Gretna and Bellevue West are stacked in this group as the fourth- and fifth-overall seeds in the event. Both of these teams have frontcourt talent that has presented challenges for opposing squads this year. Ball control is a strength for this pair, too.
The other half of this pool features Lincoln North Star and Grand Island. Youth is certainly a trend for both of these teams, particularly at the outside hitter spot. Don’t dismiss their chances at this event, though; these upstart players can hang with the best.
Lincoln Northeast Pools
The Northeast brackets have no shortage of powerhouse teams.
Pool B
Whoever comes out victorious in this group will have a great shot at winning the whole event.
Papillion-La Vista South narrowly missed out on the top overall seed as this tournament, but they’ll surely be one of the favorites this weekend. They’ve already raked in some tournament trophies this year and have a great shot at adding another one.
The Titans will face some stiff resistance from the rest of the group, though. Elkhorn South obviously has some history with Papio South, and it should be fascinating to watch another chapter in the rivalry. Lincoln Northeast and North Platte will be eager for an upset, too. These teams can match up well on the pins and are no strangers to a slugfest.
Pool C
The “Titans on top” theme carries into Pool C with Norris claiming the top seed in the group. These Titans have put up a dominant stretch of their own and have ambitions of protecting their unblemished record.
Looking to topple Norris will be Lincoln Pius X, Lincoln East, and Omaha Marian. These are all programs that you typically associate with having a lot of talent at every position. In 2021, these teams are finding their groove as they mesh some new faces together. The talent will always be there. Let’s see if it culminates in victory this weekend.
