Continue ReadingIt is that time of the year where we here at Prep Dig update our class rankings! This edition brings you the class of 2023. One thing we’ve always said about this class is it is deep in the setter position, with five in the top ten. We had little change among the top, with Texas-bound Ella Swindle Ella Swindle 6'2" | S Rock Bridge | 2023 State #6 Nation MO still ranked as our top prospect.
This isn’t an easy process and players get missed. Our friend at Prep Dig, Chris Fitzgerald posted a great article sharing what goes into our ranking system here. Our rankings don’t dictate future success as a volleyball player or person. These rankings are subjective but we feel with the hours spent dedicated to this process, we are on the right track. With that said, here are our updated Top 10 for the class of 2023.
1. Ella Swindle Ella Swindle 6'2" | S Rock Bridge | 2023 State #6 Nation MO – 6’2″ – S – Rock Bridge/KC Power – University of Texas
The silky-smooth Swindle remains our top prospect after another tremendous season. During the season she made her college choice known, committing to the Longhorns. She dished out 690 assists to go with 173 digs and 141 kills.
2. Calissa Minatee Calissa Minatee 6'0" | MB North Kansas City | 2023 State #25 Nation MO – 6’0″ – MB/OH – North Kansas City/Dynasty – University of Minnesota
One of the best things we saw this fall was Minatee staying on the court and sharpening her defense in the back row. She has been a middle but could easily see her move to the opposite at the next level. Last month she chose Minnesota as her future destination. She had 234 kills at a .339 clip in her junior season.
3. Logan Jones Logan Jones 5'10" | S Carl Junction | 2023 State #57 Nation MO – 5’10” – S – Carl Junction/Mavs – University of Arkansas
Lo Jones dropped a cool 1003 assists this fall for Carl Junction. She continues to be one of the most consistent setters in the country with her ball placement. She continues to get stronger defensively at the net. The Razorbacks are getting a good one.
4. Sydney Draper Sydney Draper 5'11" | S Pembroke Hill | 2023 State #143 Nation MO – 5’10” – S – Pembroke Hill/KC Power – Princeton University
The third setter in the top four, Draper if you recall plays up an age for her KC Power team. We always say the setters are the brains of the operation and she will take those smarts to Princeton. This year she led her team to a deep playoff run with 749 assists and 90 kills.
5. Chapel Dobbs Chapel Dobbs 6'1" | OH Helias | 2023 State MO – 6’1″ – OH – Helias/Dynasty
Dobbs balled out this fall for her Helias Catholic team dropping 370 kills on the year. She will still grow defensively from the back row and will be a solid pick-up for a mid to small D1 program.
6. Reagan Fox Reagan Fox 6'2" | OH St. Teresa's Academy | 2023 State #104 Nation MO – 6’2″ – OH – St. Teresa’s/KC Power – Rutgers University
St. Teresa’s Fox has dealt with an injury bug here and there but had a productive junior season with 218 kills and 134 digs. When healthy, she is among the elite hitters in the state. She is going to head out east to New Jersey to compete for Rutgers.
7. Elise Paul Elise Paul 6'0" | MB Lutheran South | 2023 State MO – 6’1″ – MB – Lutheran South/HPSTL
Paul had a strong season for a .500 Lutheran South program this fall. She is a long middle who can control the game both offensively and defensively. She was able to garner 239 kills in 2021. She also showed growth defensively with 144 digs and 99 total blocks.
8. Juliette Myrick Juliette Myrick 5'11" | S Eureka | 2023 State #100 Nation MO – 5’11” – S – Eureka/ Rockwood Thunder – United States Military Academy
The southpaw is our fourth setter highlighted in our top 10 and she remains steady at 8. Like many of our ranked setters, they had to wear numerous hats this fall. Myrick had 531 assists, but we must add her 252 digs and 135 kills to show her value to Eureka.
9. Ashley Mullen Ashley Mullen 5'10" | S Liberty | 2023 State #9 Nation MO – 5’10” – S – Liberty/Dynasty – UCLA
Liberty has been a strong program for years but the success seen with Mullen running the show has been phenomenal. The UCLA commit has a staple of hitters and she makes sure to give them butter sets. This fall she had 1094 assists. Mullen jumped four spots in these rankings.
10. Layne Witherspoon Layne Witherspoon 6'0" | MB Lafayette | 2023 State MO – 6’0″ – MB/OH – Lafayette/ Rockwood Thunder
Witherspoon is another of those hybrid players we see in the middle but can easily transition to the pin. Her athleticism is such a mid-level program can elevate her game to new heights. This fall, she had 211 kills at a .315 hitting percentage.
