The 12s and 13s had their PVL championships on June 4th and 5th, while the 14s had their PVL championships on June 11th and 12th to finish their PVL seasons. There is a lot of up-and-coming talent to be seen in the younger divisions. Here’s how they finished and who stood out!
12s Division
In the 12s division, Forza1 12 North UA won the championship tournament and was first in the PVL overall. During the season, they competed in the premier division, were always in the top five in tournaments, and won three tournaments including the championship tournament. They really came into their groove as a team as the season went on, winning the last tournament and finishing in first place overall in the standings. They went 7-0 in the championships, winning all their matches in two sets until they faced Mizuno LB 12 Rockstar in the semifinals which they won in three sets. They will be competing in the national division at USAV GJNC in Indianapolis.
Mizuno LB 12 Rockstar T finished second overall in the PVL standings and third in the championship tournament, only losing to Forza1 12 North UA in the semifinals. Libero, Eleanor Kaliponi, is starting to look like a veteran for Mizuno having been playing club for several years now. She’s been playing since she was 9 and reads well in defense and she also plays beach. Mizuno will be competing in the national division at GJNC. SG Elite 12 Roshambo rounds out the top of the PVL, finishing third overall and second in the championship tournament. In the gold division, Seal beach 12 Black finished at the top of championship weekend.
13s Division
In the 13s division, T-Street 13 Bailey was a stellar 36-0 and never dropped a match in any of the PVL tournaments! In the championship tournament, they won all their matches in two sets and only went three sets with Forza1 13 UA Aaron. T-Street took the final match (25-15, 21-25, 15-4). They will be competing in the open division in Indianapolis. T-Street’s middles are a head above the rest (literally), with Emma Kingston listed at 6’3” and Megan Hodges is listed at 5’11”. They both move well laterally on the net and put up a big block. Forza1 13 UA Aaron finished second overall in the PVL, as well as, finishing second in championships. They will also be competing in the open at GJNC in Indianapolis.
Mizuno LB 13 rockstar L finished third overall in the PVL and is quite competitive. They played up in the recent JVA West Coast Cup and won the 14 club division, going undefeated in that tournament. They will be competing in the open at GJNC. Mizuno’s opposite, Makenna Barnes, looks sharp for her team with good size and great defense. She runs attacks in the back row, has a quick arm, and they set her a lot. Another player to watch from Mizuno is outside hitter Hanna McGinest. She has really solid serve receive passing, makes great adjustments to sets when attacking, and has a good arm. Mizuno 13 Rockstar C won the gold division at the championships. They also finished thirteenth in the JVA West Coast Cup recently, playing up in the 14 club division. They will be competing in the patriot division at GJNC.
14s Division
The 14s division of the PVL was a battle going into the championships, with Wave 14 Brennan, Forza1 North 14 UA, and SG Elite 14 Roshambo basically been trading spots in the top three all season. On the first day of the championships, Wave and Forza1 went undefeated, while SG Elite lost one three-set match to Forza1. On the second day, Wave and Forza1 were 5-0 at the end of pool play, going into playoffs. The final was a battle, going three sets with Forza1 ultimately prevailing and defeating Wave (15-25, 25-20, 15-5). The pins are strong for both teams, with Forza1 outsides Wesley Matavao and Ryah Brock being consistent all season and Wave’s Sarah Uebelhoer and Finley Krystkowiak being stellar for their team.
