Monday morning marked the start of the four day tournament where Prep Dig will be following teams and athletes over the next few days, building up our list of players, and seeing what hidden gems we can find. The first article of the event will come out of the 15 National Division. Teams in this division have won their region or earned a trickle down from a team who won their region and then upgraded to an open bid. There are some high level athletes who stepped up in a big way to start their quest to a 15 National Division Championship?
USAV 2022 – Day 1 – 15 Open/National Photos
How do I come up with these names?
The National Division only played two divisions this morning where I tried to see as much as I could on the roughly 18 courts with six pools with each pool having three courts. Did I make it to all the courts? Almost. There was another two pools coming in for the PM wave Monday. I want to make sure I see enough volleyball that can provide an accurate description of who I am writing about. The tournament is young with plenty more opportunities to see more athletes over the next few days.
Club Ignit Select 15 Blue
Club Ignit Select comes out of West Des Moines, Iowa area where the 2025 Class in Iowa is loaded. Molly Shafer is a major, go to outside where she was one of the top Freshmen in the state last fall. Another really dynamic athlete on this squad is Ellie Muller who provides a big block and is very dangerous attacking off one foot.
Nebraska Premier 15 Gold
Premier is always one of the top clubs out of Nebraska, consistently producing some of the top players in the region as well as the country. A long, athletic outside is Shay Heaney while setter Brooke Larsen can get everyone involved. They were dominant to start the day on Monday and are definitely aiming for gold.
HPSTL 15 Orange
HPSTL out of St. Louis has two real strong teams with Royal competing in Open and Orange in National. Outside hitter Kathryn Luth is a powerful force, Uber athletic. She is very physical at the net where she is always an outlet. Kamryn Tifft commands the middle in the front line where can find the deep corner to score points.
OTVA 15 O Meg
Kayden Green of OTVA 15 O Meg packs a punch on the right side. She is strong and explosive and always approaches with a sense of urgency to score. She’s a fast twitch right side where her power can provide a lot of momentum for OT.
Colorado Juniors 16 Shannon
Colorado Juniors 15 Shannon looked scary good with a 2-0 start to their tournament. They are long, athletic, and extremely balanced. Bridget Malone is a do it all type of outside where she is solid in all six rotations providing a big swing out of the backrow. Libero Ashlyn Reilly is long and athletic where she provides a lot of range. When this team is in system watch out for middle blocker Erika Sayer. She is so dangerous off one foot and has the ability to take over a match.
MAVS 816
MAVS 816 was rock solid as they have athletes at every position who can ball control and score points, it’s a team of volleyball athletes as opposed to positions where their attackers can swing from anywhere. Brylee Johnson runs the show where she has this quiet confidence of how she’ll get the job done. Two attackers I noticed were Addie Hashagen and Madeline Sallee who were lethal from the front line.
OK Charge 15 UA
This squad out of Oklahoma provided a ton of firepower where I walked to their court to see a big swing and a kill by Addison Dale on the right side. There are plenty of athletes that lead to a balanced team that is quarterbacked by setter, Jasmine Liongco. Not only can she put the ball on the money for her attackers, but she is a solid defender in right back. An electric athlete is six rotation outside, Addison Worley. With an aggressive approach and violent armswing, Worley is an attacker everywhere on the court.
Aspire 15 Premier
At the 15s level and really any level, coaches are going to instill into their setters to use the middles! In order for this to happen it takes countless reps and trust between these two athletes. For Aspire 15 Premier out of Arizona, Caroline Munson and Jordyn Decker were really clicking. Decker has a smooth release where Munson wasn’t afraid to swing, finding the short and deep corners.
