The Division 2 voting had a lot of options, but it was ultimately a familiar program pushing one of its seniors to the top.
Here’s a look at the leading vote getters from the D2 poll.
Margo Sudzina Margo Sudzina 5'6" | S Notre Dame Prep | 2023 State MI , Notre Dame Prep S (30.83%)
The veteran setter for the Irish took home the top voting honors with over 20,000 votes in the D2 poll. Last year saw another NDP setter, Alyssa Borellis, earn MVP honors in Division 2 while leading the Irish to a state championship. Notre Dame has a lot of graduation losses to address, but it’s a program that tends to reload and not rebuild. Having a senior leader like Sudzina on the floor will go a long way. She should be able to help develop some new go-to hitters early in the year and keep the Irish as a contender in D2 once again.
Laurece Abraham Laurece Abraham 6'1" | MB Country Day | 2023 State #111 Nation MI , Country Day MH (23.57%)
Abraham is one of the most explosive players you will find in the state. The future Yale Bulldog is set for a big prep season in 2022. She’s been one of a handful of powerful hitters for DCD in years past. This year, she gets to take on a bigger role and be the clear go-to middle for the Yellowjackets. Abraham can play well above the net and deliver an attack that seems unstoppable. Her blocking is a big asset as well for DCD, who once again has the athleticism and talent to make a deep postseason run in 2022.
Grace Spoelma Grace Spoelma 5'8" | S Grand Rapids Christian | 2024 State MI , Grand Rapids Christian L/DS (12.56%)
Spoelma is one of a few returning starters for the D2 power, GRC. She has a lot of big-match experience to rely on, and her on-court leadership will be crucial for the Eagles as they look to stay in the mix for a fourth state title in five years. With a lot of new offensive starters being mixed in, Spoelma and the defense will have to step up for GRC this season. If the Eagles are to remain a contender, its likely that she’s going to be a driving force.
Kaela Chingwa Kaela Chingwa 6'3" | MB North Branch | 2024 State MI , North Branch MH (9.99%)
North Branch was well represented in this poll, as the Broncos are absolutely stacked for the 2022 season. Chingwa came away with the most votes of the group and its certainly not out of the question that she could be the game changer for North Branch in 2022. Standing 6’2”, this junior middle is one of the most dominant blockers in the state, while also hitting close to .300 on her attacks. With another offseason of training under her belt, it will be tough for many in Division 2 to match her skillset at the net.
Jillian Bruckner, Niles MH (4.79%)
Niles put together a really strong 2021 season with over 40 wins, a league championship, and a regional crown. The Vikings lost a big senior class and will have a new head coach this fall, making the challenge of repeating last year’s success difficult. However, Bruckner is back and was one of the standouts in the 2021 season. She will be relied on for her experience and her play this year. Bruckner brings a lot of different skills to the floor and will be one of the top players in D2 for sure. If Niles can stay in the mix this year, Bruckner will definitely be in the MVP discussion.
