There were the early commits of the summer and now as everyone prepares for their fall season, prep athletes will be balancing their high school seasons along with some official visits, getting on campuses and a real feel for what these programs are like at the next level. I’m going to zero in on the West and take a look at athletes who have given their verbal commitment and ones who are on the radar that would be big time gets at the next level. Midwest programs love to get the top kids from the West Coast and we are seeing that already with some of these recruiting trends.
Charlie Fuerbringer Charlie Fuerbringer 5'11" | S Mira Costa | 2024 State #2 Nation CA – Mira Costa (CA) – Mizuno Long Beach
Committed to Wisconsin
This is a major get for the Badgers who are building off their most recent national title. Fuerbringer is the top setter in the Class of 2024 and brings an extremely dynamic skill set. She moves extremely well on the court and can command an offense while also being used as an attacker which she did for Mizuno LB this past club season. I can’t help but compare her game to former Badger, Sydney Hilley who was one of the top prep setters coming out of high school, but was used primarily as an outside hitter at the high school level (playing for a top large school program in Champlin Park, MN). This will bring plenty of flare to the program and
Addison Pohl – Shadow Ridge (AZ) – Revolution
Committed to Houston
Pohl is 6’4 and has a blend of athleticism and physicality where she can take over a match. She was a major part of the success of AZ Revolution at nationals. She will take her game to Houston who will be heading to the Big 12 in 2023. Pohl can hit the tempos in front of the setter and can also be deadly when attacking off one foot on the slide. Her block is going to make the other side of the net second guess their shot.
Jenna Hanes Jenna Hanes 6'3" | MB Cathedral Catholic | 2024 State #76 Nation CA – Cathedral Catholic (CA) – Wave
Committed to Michigan
So much speed and athleticism. That is the name of the game for Hanes who will be heading to the Big 10 with her verbal commit to Michigan. The Wolverines are building a solid Class of 2024 that also includes Ellie White (Mother McAuley/1st Alliance) out of Chicagoland and Ella Demetrician (Appleton North/FC Elite) out of Wisconsin. Hanes is tough matchup for the other side of the net because she can nail all the tempos as well as a quick snap where the ball lands before she does. She works extremely well with her high school and club setter, Amanda Saeger Amanda Saeger 5'11" | S Cathedral Catholic | 2024 State #125 Nation CA , who is a recent commit to DePaul.
Amanda Saeger Amanda Saeger 5'11" | S Cathedral Catholic | 2024 State #125 Nation CA – Cathedral Catholic (CA) – Wave
Committed to DePaul
Another California kid heading to the Midwest. Amanda Saeger Amanda Saeger 5'11" | S Cathedral Catholic | 2024 State #125 Nation CA is the floor general for Wave and will look to do the same when she heads to Chicago to play for Coach Marie Zidek. Zidek and Saeger will have the San Diego background where Coach Zidek was an assistant at San Diego since 2014 before taking the head coaching position at De Paul. Seeing Saeger live at Triple Crown this past club season was a treat. She has complete control of the court and has so many intangibles in her favor that was a big reason why Wave 16 Brennan were one of the top teams in the country.
Alexis Haury – Silverton (OR) – NPJ
Committed to Washington
Lets not forget about these PNW athletes. Haury is one of the top athletes out of the Pacific Northwest playing for North Pacific Juniors where she has such a gritty style. She will head to Seattle to play for Washington where she will play into their scheme real well as one of the top programs in the Pac 12. Haury’s game starts with great footwork, and plenty of hand strength where she can push the ball from pin to pin with ease. She is another setter with a huge upside of intangibles where she can will her team to win.
Uncommitted
Babi Gubbins Babi Gubbins 6'3" | OH Mater Dei | 2024 State #18 Nation CA – Mater Dei (CA) – Mizuno Long Beach
Outside Hitter
Gubbins is going to be a major get at the next level where she can do it all. With a really polished fundamental base, Gubbins is a six-rotation outside who can attack from both pins as well as out of the backrow. She is able to handle a bulk of serve receive and makes a smooth transition from pass to attack. Her ability to terminate off a variety of tempos and from multiple spots on the court makes her a top prospect as a pin hitter.
Taylor Yu Taylor Yu 6'0" | S Temple City | 2024 State #15 Nation CA – Temple City (CA) – SG Elite
Setter
Pure playmaker. Yu has such a great feel for the game where she keeps the other side of the net guessing and her attackers never having to worry if the ball is going to be in their wheelhouse. It all starts with her footwork and hands. When Yu receives the ball, she is always neutral, receiving the ball high where she’s not tipping her sets to the other side, she’s unpredictable. When the defense starts keying in on her hitters, she’s running various routes with her attackers to different tempos to various spots on the net, or taking it herself on the second contact. For a position that is extremely difficult, Yu can make it look effortless.
Isabel Clark Isabel Clark 6'2" | OH Mater Dei | 2024 State #66 Nation CA – Mater Dei (CA) – Momentous
Outside Hitter
Clark is a star on the basketball and volleyball court where she has so much athleticism and physicality. She played club for Momentous this past season where she was a big time scorer on the outside. There is plenty of pace coming off her swing where she is able to tool the block or make it tough for the defense to stay in system. She is really physical in the front line where she can make a solid block, hit the split, or find the open spot. Her best volleyball is ahead of her.
Addie Kanouf – Cherry Creek (CO) – Colorado Juniors
Pin Hitter
At 6’5, Kanouf definitely brings a presence to the front line. She really expanded her game over this past club season where she was able to score as an outside as well as an opposite. Her block as an opposite is a gamechanger for her team where she is strong, establishes her position, and makes the opposing attackers think a little bit before they take a big swing. She plays for one of the top high schools in Colorado at Cherry Creek out of the South Denver Metro. With the gains she made over the club season, she could be a really big pick up where her game will skyrocket at the next level.
Blaykli Bobik – Queen Creek (AZ) – AZ Storm
Outside/OPP
Violent arm swing. Bobik is a major port scorer where AZ Storm is always training top tier outside attackers where Bobik is right in line. She can do this from the outside and even the backrow. Bobik can also handle a large bulk of the serve receive responsibilities. I’m sure top programs on the West Coast have to be in talks with Bobik as well as others across the country. A long, athletic, 6’1 pin who can pass and score from everywhere is someone that is going to make a lot of gyms better.
