Volleyball is such a fun sport to watch. The execution of great plays that manifest points is exciting, especially back and forth rallies. Every team and every player contributes to the game, each position has its importance. Just as passers and setters, hitters are a key position. I saw many, many hitters who made me want to see more of their game play. The energy of the teams this past weekend was amazing and communication on the court was visible all day. Here are a few hitters who stood out this weekend and deserve to be put under the spotlight.
Natalia Marquez
Natalia Marquez
Natalia Marquez coached by Antonio Rodriguez and Carolyn Reptti has a powerful hit that creates force and speed behind a ball to score. She is fun to watch because she brings great energy to the court. Marquez knows how to look for gaps in the defense of the opponent and take advantage of the openings. She is a strong and smart player.
Kiana Greer
Kiana Greer
Kiana Greer coached by Loriann Perkins and Lindsey Breeden is a mighty outside hitter that doesn’t let height dictate her ability to bang the ball. She gets up in the air and has power behind the ball which makes it difficult to defend. Greer can stay calm under pressure which is part of playing on offense and defense. Her IQ for the game is very high.
Noa Roberts
Noa Roberts
Noa Roberts coached by Vu Dinh and Samantha Middleborn is a smart player who knows how to read the court and place the ball in open areas. She has a strong hit and knows how to tool the block to score for her team. Roberts excels on offense and defense. She can hit the ball from the front and can bump set when the setter can’t get to it, along with helping on blocks. She had a last game-winning block for her team to win.
Manaia Ogbechie Manaia Ogbechie 6’3″ | MB Oaks Christian | 2025 State #123 Nation CA coached by Jennifer and Scott Baklenko is a force at the net playing middle. Her high hands were like a brick wall when the ball was roofed. She has an eye for following the ball and the footwork to get to either pin and help with defense. Ogbechie has good blocking and attacking techniques which makes her stand out on the court. She has good skills and plays her position with ease.
Allison Mason
Allison Mason
Allison Mason coached by Vu Dinh and Samantha Middleborn covered the net with her speed and agility to get to the pins and make a play. She has the power to initiate an effective offensive attack. Mason capitalizes on overpasses by her quick reaction to bang the ball right back over the net. Her roof of the ball goes straight down, or the block is angled to make the ball hard to defend from the other side. She is a great middle player.
Jenny Li
Jenny Li
Jenny Li coached by Luis Cuatok and Said Souikane plays the middle and right side. Her height is an asset to both positions. She is quick at the net and can find the open back corners to tip too. She has a fast lateral movement from side to side to get to her pins and help with the block. Li jumps high and has high hands that help her with being the first line of defense. She protects the net and plays her position very well.
