During the AM wave five 18-U teams played against each other and I scouted three of the matches.
Here is a look at four athletes from the Topeka Saints and Kaw Valley 18-1 squads. Both teams fell in two-set losses to the Northwest Force 18-1 squad featuring athletes from St. Joseph, Missouri area schools.
Becca Gateley, 5’6”, OH, Cair Paravel, ’27 (Topeka Saints 18-1)
So Gateley is just a freshman but is playing up on the Saints 18 squad due to an injury to another player. She is a talented bouncy athlete. She plays three sports and this season decided to play on a select team rather than a premier squad due to time constraints. Gateley had three kills and an ace in the Saints’ loss in their opening match. It will be interesting to see which sport she decides to specialize in if she decides she wants to compete at the college level.
Hannah Bartlett, 5’7”, L, Hayden, ’24 (Topeka Saints 18-1)
Hayden’s Barlett is a solid libero who could play for an NAIA or JUCO program. She is currently uncommitted and would be a solid late addition to a program still looking for defensive-minded players. She racked up nine serve receptions and six digs. She has a quality serve and a solid defensive frame. She used her feet well to get to the ball and therefore did not overreach for balls.
Trystin Torrey, 5’3”, L, Rock Creek, ’25 (Kaw Valley 18-1)
Torrey is a junior libero in the class of 2025. She made a couple of super impressive digs in the match and is willing to put her body on the line to make the big defensive play. Torrey registered 15 serve receptions and seven digs in the match I scouted.
Krista Porter, 5’7”, RS, Valley Heights, ’26 (Kaw Valley 18-1)
Porter was one of several athletes playing up for Kaw Valley. The sophomore attacker had a nice match and looks to have lots of potential. She finished with five serve receptions, three digs, and two kills in the team’s first match of the day. She could develop into a six-rotation player. She played a poised game for her age and I hope I get to see her play in a high school match next fall.
