Here is our breakdown of the eight best places to be on Thursday night.
Class A #2 Elkhorn South at Class A #7 Elkhorn
The battle of Elkhorn used to be a battle among top teams in Class B, but now it’s a battle between two of the top teams in Class A. It’s also the last year that the battle for Elkhorn will be between just two teams as Elkhorn North is set to join the fray in 2020.
Class A Gretna at Class A #4 Millard North
As I’ve said all summer, Class A is deep with talented teams and Gretna may not be ranked, but it is definitely a state-tournament caliber team and will be a huge test for the defending Class A champs, you have a lot of holes to fill from last year.
Triangular at Class C-1 #1 Wahoo with Class B Aurora and Class B #4 Norris
The nightcap of this triangular is the main event between Wahoo and Norris, two very athletic and big teams, but Aurora is as well coached as anyone and while the Huskies may not be big, they are gritty and neither Norris nor Wahoo can look past them.
Class C1 #4 Lincoln Lutheran at Class B #1 Waverly
Well, they haven’t hauled me away to a hospital for the insane yet for putting Waverly at #1 in Class B and the Vikings are going to get a test right out of the gate against Marriah Buss & Company from a Lincoln Lutheran team that should be among the best teams in Class C1.
Class C1 #3 Kearney Catholic at Class C1 #6 Columbus Scotus
Just about any Centennial Conference match is must-watch-volleyball, but it doesn’t get a whole lot better than these two traditional powers knocking heads on opening night. This is the first of what could be multiple meetings between the two this year.
Class C2 #1 Grand Island Central Catholic at Class C2 #3 Superior
Graduation and transfers hit Superior pretty hard this summer, but with the Meyer sisters – Kalynn and Shayla – the Wildcats are going to be tough to beat every time out, but Grand Island Central Catholic features some of the best firepower and depth in Class C2.
Class C2 #7 Lutheran High Northeast at Class D1 #7 Elgin-Pope John
This has a chance to be an outstanding match as both teams return quite a bit of talent and should be ready to hit the ground running on opening night.
Class C1 #8 Wayne at Class C2 #8 Ponca
These are two under-the-radar teams that could easily find themselves at state this year with a real shot at getting past the first round. Whoever gets this win will get off to a strong start and it’s likely to be good for the wild card point total at the end of the year too.
