The crop of players in the Class of 2022 are a special group. The Missouri High School Volleyball Coaches Association All-State teams have 21 sophomores (six on the Class 1 list; 10 on Class 2; two on Class 3 and 3 on Class 4). We are going to try to narrow that elite list down even more for the Prep Dig Missouri Super Sophomores of 2019.
Caroline Beckmann – Outside Hitter, Eldon
Despite a heartbreaking loss in the district final to Blair Oaks, Eldon and Caroline Beckmann consider 2019 a success. With no seniors on the roster, finishing the year 17-14 is a positive. With Beckmann returning, the sky is the limit in 2020. The outside hitter is a strong all-around player, averaging five kills per set while hitting .342 on the year. She is a strong back row player as well – with 3.3 digs per set in 2019. With her Class 3 all-state selection this season, look for her to gain some college interest heading into her junior season.
GoldenSydney Golden – Setter, Nixa
There are not really words for the kind of season Sydney Golden and Nixa had in 2019: 37-4-1, Class 4 State Title. The Eagles put four on the all-state team, including Golden. Nixa avenged an early-season loss to Willard in the district final and then took out Lafayette in the state title game. Lafayette had also defeated the Eagles earlier in the year. Golden got better and better as the season progressed – and as she got better, so too did her team. She ended the year with 1059 assists and her average of 11.4 assists per set is right up there among the top setters in the country.
Tevi Gurley – Setter, RS, El Dorado
Gurley does a little bit of everything for El Dorado, which lands her on this list – the Bulldog’s captain was second on the team in kills with 274, led the team in assists and aces with 343 and 54, respectively. El Dorado finished the year at 24-5-5 and the whole crew comes back in 2020. Gurley and the Bulldogs will be a force to be reckoned with in Class 2 next season.
Kennedy Lane – Outside Hitter, St. Pius X (Festus)
The announcement that Lane made the Class 2 all-state list makes the outside hitter a two-time selection – and for good reason. She helped Pius to a state-runner up finish this season, losing to juggernaut Hermann in the finals. In the tournament, Lane had 40 kills in four matches, while hitting just over .300. In 2019, Lane had 333 kills and averaged 4.9 kills per set. A strong club season and D1 interest in Lane might skyrocket.
Limback – KC InvasionIsabella Limback – Middle Hitter, Santa Fe
A state-runner up in Class 1 isn’t too shabby for Santa Fe – and being one of six sophomores on the all-state list in the class is pretty nice for Limback. The middle hitter contributed in a big way for the Chiefs in 2019, averaging five kills per set while hitting .302 and leading Santa Fe in kills with 382. She was second on the team in digs, aces and blocks. During the round robin portion of the Final Four at the state tournament, she amassed 22 kills and 24 digs. She will play her club volleyball this season with KC Invasion.
Kylie Taylor – Libero, Licking
Defense is paramount to the success of a team and Taylor is really good at it. The libero helped the Wildcats to a third place finish at the state tournament and did so averaging almost 11 digs per set. In the first match of round robin play, Taylor had 14 digs against eventual state champion Hermann. The Class 2 all-state selection will be a key piece for Licking once again in 2020. Taylor is also a point guard for the Wildcats basketball team.
