GRAND ISLAND – Millard West will be playing for its first state volleyball championship tomorrow thanks to its 25-23, 25-22, 16-25, 25-16 victory over Papillion-LaVista in Friday’s semifinals at the Heartland Event Center.
In a tight first set, top-seeded Millard West broke a 23-23 tie with a kill from Alexis Anderson and a Monarch hitting error to take an early 1-0 advantage. In the second set, Millard West also pulled away late.
With a 20-19 lead in the second set, another Anderson kill followed by two Papio errors got the Wildcats up 23-19. After an Elena Melendez ace got Papillion-LaVista within 24-22, Erin Sosnowchik got a kill for the Wildcats to put Millard West up 2-0.
Papillion-LaVista dominated the third set, but Millard West bounced back in the fourth set and never trailed after taking a 1-0 lead.
Sosnowchik led Millard West with 13 kills and Anderson finished with 11. Morgan Rademacher had a team-high 16 digs and Tiffany Wentworth had 35 assists.
Papillion-LaVista was led by Katie Stephens with 17 kills while Priscilla O’Dowd had 13 and Elena Melendez had 11. Melendez led the Monarchs with 30 digs and Jessica Peters had 35 assists and 24 digs.
